"Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they ( Read more... )

Absolutely. It profoundly shaped my social development. I was a bitter and deeply cynical freshman.

Do you see the allegory, though? "nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me?" "What I have to do, I have to come out from somewhere and catch them."

Shit.

You'd make a terrible politician. You're too compassionate.

I beg to differ; that's precisely why I'll make a wonderful politician.
In the style of FDR.

You know, every one around me despised that book when we read it, but i was fascinated. Holden Caulfield was an amazing blend of inquizitive and cynical...it never ceased to amaze me.

in other words, yeah. I liked that book too.

that is almost my favorite book of high school. in the running: the great gatsby, the grapes of wrath and the above. and i liked cuckoo's nest too. and slaughterhouse. damn. 2nd semester last year was gooooood. funny how i pretty much just blocked anything from 10th grade out.
you're sick?! sucks. be prepared for that gov test on wed.

i wish i could have used part of that for my senior quote, but i think it can't be split up. its unfortunate, because that image was/is so vivid in my mind that i feel a powerful connection to it and wish i could document that in some way.

Fuck yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. Holy shit, this effects me. The quote I used was equally powerful for me, though (see my previous entry).

Man, this and FDR and Winesburg and so much is spinning around in my head. If I can just connect them I'll have a killer college application essay.

I'll post it when I'm done.

you can change your senior quote i think. talk to sydney.

you're sooooort of like holden. i don't know. i second katie's comment, and...i just feel like you're a happier guy than holden. maybe he's just bad at hiding his unhappiness, or you're really good at it. i don't know. but AH. what a lovely book.

katie told me about your comment war. it's quite interesting.

I don't think I want to change my quote. I like the one I have, and this one is way too long.

Also, I am much different as a senior than I have been in years past. As a freshman I was a lot like Holden.

Is there any homework due Hoffman tomorrow? (for you, today?)
