in my new home i kill, on average, four spiders a day. in my bedroom. last night one was near my pillow and two were mating (mating!) above my desk.

You may be in the throes of what I'm told is simply called "spider season" in Davis, which is a real thing and not to be underestimated. I heard about this from past Davis residents whose outdoor plants were annually draped in spider webs.
