I think the point that your shrink is trying to get across is that without goals in a relationship, there's nothing to achieve, which means nothing to look forward to-- a dead end. Basically, that you're an adult and the choices you make are life- altering ones at this point, to advance from your current state. Progression in a relationship comes from taking steps and if you stay where you are, say, 15 years from now, you and Joel would miss out on starting a family together [or separately] along with getting financially stable by also getting a career. I think that's what she meant overall. I think it is possible for you and Joel to move out together if it means getting an under-the-table babysitting job and/ or him getting a job in his field instead of staying at KFC. Don't close all doors yet because there are ways around these sorts of obstacles- even if it means thinking outside the box
