Does It Really Matter? Chapter Nineteen

Author's Note: Sorry, I'm WAY off schedule. Everything's in full swing now, everything's busier. No more lazing around. But I think this one will be worth it. And, we're winding down to the final ones. There's most likely going to be two or three more, then it's done.

The last two weeks of school flew by after Jaedin and I. Before we knew it, school was out, and as we walked out of school, hand-in-hand, I contemplated my life so far. I wondered how one person and a few weeks could turn my entire life around. Before, I had been a spoiled, slightly bratty popular kid. Now, I was more humble, thoughtful, and really appreciated the little things.

When my parents found out about my new “friend”, they stopped talking to me. They were mad that I no longer contacted Haley or any of my old friends, or did anything I used to do. Instead of driving to the most expensive restaurant in town and then going to a new movie with Haley, blowing a bunch of money, I went to Jaedin's grandparents' house and rode horses.

His grandparents had treated me like a granddaughter, and I felt like one. If I came over by myself, his grandma and I would sit out on the back porch, drinking iced tea and watching the cars go by, gossiping while his grandpa read the paper silently.

And one day, while we were back at our little oasis out in the fields, as we watched the sun set, Jaedin stood up, walked in front of me, and dropped onto his knee, my eyes widened. He pulled a black velvet box out of his pocket, and opened it to reveal two rings-one that was gold, a good-sized diamond in the middle, and two smaller diamonds on either side, then another ring, whittled out of wood, sanded down until it was smooth.

I had no need to say anything. I just nodded and smiled, and Jaedin said nothing; he pushed me back, and we did the same thing I had done with Lance at the party, although now, on the grass, it was with someone more gentle, and someone I cared about truly.
