I think I liked them best in the early seasons. Imo, Sam has always been a more self-centered character, looking for attachments that are specifically not family, but at least he cared back then. Now he's so insensitive to his brother that he's surprised that Dean is upset because he told him the 'truth'! Really?! It's almost like a bit of soulless Sam coming back, and I didn't like him much either... *sigh* Here's hoping the writers have a plan and can fix this... (no I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested! lol!)
Like I say, neither one of these characters resembles the characters from the original show for me. They're not even consistent from week to week. We're not watching the same show any more and if I find myself making comparisons with the original show and characters I just wind up angry, so I try not to
( ... )
You're so right about the extreme fandom viewpoints!! When I was watching and heard Sam talking about Dean being afraid of being alone, I thought that it sounded almost exactly like something out of a fic or a blog. They do seem to be going to extremes in all things - good/evil, angels/demons, Sam would rather not have a brother/Dean desperately wants family. Rather ironic that Sam is the one who left to make himself a permanent home, when it's Dean who really wants it more. It's fine if the characters are dissimilar, it makes the show more interesting, but having them be so far apart and distancing themselves from what the core of what the show is about, does nothing but hurt the show and, imo, do a disservice to the fans. Here's hoping for an improvement after the two week hellatus!
