Adam Glass has tried to allude to this issue before in Defending Your Life. I'm beginning to appreciate him as a writer who tries to address serious issues and write the boys honestly. He's not necessarily supported by the rest of the team, though.

Wouldn't it be nice if the writers would all get together to be on the same page and finally gave some resolution to the issues they make and not just tease us with them before, basically, forgetting them (Dean's experiences in hell are barely even mentioned any more!) *sigh*

Exactly what happened to Sam in his hell has never been addressed either. Some cliche images of meathooks and fire but, come on! Sam's hell would have been more complex than that. I think they've pretty much swept all that under the rug now. There hasn't been a whiff of a suggestion in recent seasons that their current behaviour is at all coloured by their experiences in hell. It's like we begin each new season with a clean slate and we're not supposed to expect their characters to be a development on previous seasons. It's like: "OK, this season their characters are like *this* and the issues are *these* - go!" And yet, old grudges that should have been laid to rest and traits they should have grown out of keep getting replayed ad nauseum. The sins that should have been paid for, forgiven and forgotten by their time in hell still get dredged up again and again, while the lessons they should have (and did!) take away from those experiences are just ignored.
