Catching up on the middle bit of Merlin that I missed when my flatmate came to borrow make-up for Hallowe'en...
Just when I literally losing all hope and for the first time considering stopping watching in spite of my love and obsession, weakness for eye candy and helplessness in the face of cuetness it goes and mildly redeems itself.
Gwen actually suspects! And acts on those suspicions! There is furtherance of the plot that isn't reset at the end. Are you sure we're watching the same show? Putting aside the horrible mutilation of Morgana's character, the complete ignorance of every at court towards her smug evil faces was just getting ridiculous. I'm daring to hope that this is actually going somewhere, but my trust in these people is so low...
In addition: super epicicity, POTC music for comedy escapes from debtors, wyverns (like dragons, only smaller), LOTR music for epic flight from said wyverns into Minas Tyrith beautiful isolated white towered city. Merlin-verse is actually Oz: Arthur needs a brain, Gwaine a brain and Merlin courage (to out his-sorceror-self). Amusingly the bridge dwarf dude seems to have caught Gwen's contractionitis: it's a deadly plague in Camelot and its environs, dontcha know.
Mild (wouldn't be mild in any other show) ARGH: Gwaine points out that Uther isn't a "half decent king" (read, crazed genocide) and Arthur acknowledges this and immediately treads the writers' line of "yes, but we are keeping him for no apparent reason". ARGH.
Randomly, whereas Buffy became a determined yet weak girl when her strength was taken away, Arthur just looks like a constipated pig. Plus I cannot get enough of Merlin's cute obnoxious grin as Arthur comes around. "Are we gonna have a surprise party?!"
AND FINALLY: Merlin/Gwaine is a ship to approach Morgana/Morgause (totally not sisters - do the maths)! I'm glad our slash-happy writers have not deserted us.
Apologies for the back and forthness of this post: this is what the Merlin writers do to my brain! *wibbles*
"This is a quest, Merlin, not a treasure hunt" *Pause* "Well it is sort of a-"
"Merlin!"
How was that campfire scene not the best thing ever?! Merlin's cute little face when he tested the water with "Arthur's lucky to have us", followed by his confident smile and "I'd do the same for you". Then the affectionate teasing. These guys were instant BFFs: it's adorable!
