Taken away from their mothers...?

[Zelda wonders what that means. She's not too surprised to hear it, however.]

Yeah. To be sold. I guess they were given t'the people here instead? Thas' real nice, but... I could walk an'eat real food before my owners bought me.

[What? The children brought here were... going to be sold? And they were taken from their actual families? Is that what she's hearing?]

Forgive me, but I am not certain I understand what you mean.

[Gawd it's not that hard, Miss Lady.]

None of the pups' birth-moms are here. So they're somewhere else. So they were taken from them before they could eat real food or walk or anything. An' given to people here. Right?

That's jus' much earlier than I was taken from my mom to go with my owners.

Maybe they no longer had a mother.

You think their moms died?

That would be the only logical explanation, wouldn't it? Unless their mothers abandoned them.

Nah, there's plenny reasons. They coulda wanted to breed th'moms again real soon. It's not - I mean, my owners say it's not too good to do that a lot.

Humans mature slower than dogs, so the stage it takes you about 6 months to reach takes humans maybe 3 or 4 years. That, together with the fact theyre being adopted by their own species, is why human babies are adopted out earlier.

...Plus these babies aren't real.

Uh...

I guess...

So... what's a seven-year-old human like?

Either way, there's no need not to take care of them.

Weeelllll, most of the food is different, an' so many people don' wanna be called Mister or even Master, an' people with collars say they ain't pets, an' no one thinks I'll be sold when we get wherever we're goin' even though I been taken away from my owners.

That's about it.
