Okay so you know how I said that stuff about getting my shit together? Well, once upon a time on the online sites I saw a blog about a guy who draws comics and worked out a self-disciplinary system of schedules called THE SCHEDULE. I obviously didn't really, uh, was moved to take it up... and look where it got me. Here. So I was all like getting ( Read more... )

Im not pro but I am working on my next book full time right now. Im more a sleepin type but it doesnt quite ring true for me. I start ussually around noon to seven I work. Generally a page a day. If I have to do anything during that day the work slips into the night. I often stay up till 3 or 4 working. Ive been doing about three pages a week for the last two months but the last two weeks Ive ramped up to four pages a week and one in the weekend for a 5 page calender week. The book will be done for TCAF! People like Ross Campbell, O Malley and CLoonan break my mind. I dont know how theyre so regimented. I think the secret is locking yourself in a room w no internet.

I guess i work on art mostly, i mean i go to school for it full time. ps it seemed like that while i was in middle school all you cats that i looked up to were in college and now that i'm in college you're all in the real world and i'm stuck here. Anyway, i generally plan out all my non class days in advance and then schedual friday and saturday nights for getting sloshed.

the real world is so much better.
You get laid every night,
everything you draw gets published,
and gravity only works to your advantage.

I think for most of North World 2 it was:

Work at day job, come home and eat dinner and watch tv show with wife, draw until 11pm. End.

Then I got laid off and just drew all day (after internet).

I am definitely a slackass who barely manages to get stuff done. It's really not a good way to do things. I just started work on my very first graphic novel so I thank you, Sir Nate, for blessing me with this timely post.

For whatever it's worth, here's what I'm up to these days. I'm obviously no Tony Moore or anything, but I'm drawing a lot and it's working for me.

I have a day job at the office. Every day I take a few minutes throughout the day to lay out at least one page, in PhotoShop and print it off to take home with me. That night, I lightbox it onto bristol while watching a DVD. I then ink about half of it and the next day ink about half at work. Obviously this all overlaps, but I'm able to churn out almost a page a day. I figure for having a full-time job, this is really good.

My point? A regular schedule produces results. Treating it like work helps, but I have a slight advantage in that while drawing is work, it's much more "fun" work than anything else I have in front of me, so it's sort of a release.

Good luck figuring out what works best for you. Looking into it is a big step in the right direction!
