a lot of people watch TDS for real news and some really know more about what's going on in the world than a lot of other people do. some girl I vaguely know actually only read America (The Book) in her 7th grade history class and aced her final, even though the book is completely satire. there's still a boatload of actual, real information in there, which is the same for the shows.
