lumos-create Two-year old Draco toddled across their manor’s garden. The sky was darkening into night. Even at the age of two, he walked like the aristocrat he was. He noticed that there was an ivory table and a pair of matching chairs by the fountain. He tottered towards one of the chairs and climbed up onto it. He wondered what it was doing here. The sound of his father’s voice reminded him. It was his parents’ wedding anniversary today.
“Be careful with that!” Lucius snapped at the two house elves that almost disappeared under the large crate they were carrying. The house elves carefully set it near the fountain.
“Hello, father,” Draco called out, trying to catch his father’s attention.
Lucius gave Draco a small smile and scooped his young son up. “Look at this Draco, I think you’ll like it.”
Draco watched as the house elves pried the crate open. A minute later, Draco was looking at the prettiest peacock he had ever seen. The bird was majestic. The peacock’s feathers were wider than Draco was tall. Even in the dying light, one could see the amazing colours jump right out. It was breathtaking. One of the house elves quickly tethered it to a peg in the ground. The peacock tried to shake the strap around its leg off. Even the way it walked and shook its leg was elegant.
“It’s excellent. Is that for mother?” Draco asked as he squirmed in his father’s arms. He wanted to see the peacock up close. It was enchanting. Lucius set him down on the grass.
“Yes, it’s for your mother. Now be careful, Draco,” Lucius warned him absent-mindedly as he turned his attention to the flowers that were being brought out into the garden. As Dobby, one of his house elves, straightened the orchid centrepiece, Lucius checked his gold pocket watch. Narcissa would be home from Diagon Alley soon. “Faster, elves.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Lucius saw Draco poking the peacock with a stick he had probably picked off the ground. Without turning towards his son, he scolded him lightly. “Draco, stop agitating the peacock.”
The house elves returned to set the table up. Their finest china went with their finest silver cutlery. Nothing was too good for his lovely wife on their anniversary. Lucius supervised all this with a sharp eagle eye.
As the house elves disappeared back into the house to prepare the food, Lucius noticed a spot on one of the plates. He frowned. “Dobby!” he called out. Dobby didn’t appear. Lucius sighed. Fine, he’ll do it himself. He placed his hand inside his robes and reached for his wand. It wasn’t there. Lucius checked his other pocket. The wand wasn’t there either. He frowned. Where--? Wait. Draco. Stick. Peacock.
Lucius spun around to face his son. Draco was tapping the peacock with Lucius’ missing wand. Lucius’ eyes widened as he reached for his wand. “Draco! No!”
A loud bang made Lucius grab his son instead. He pulled Draco away from the smoke that now engulfed the peacock. Lucius quickly checked his son for any possible injuries. After seeing that only Draco’s hair seemed to be out of place, Lucius turned to look at his latest expensive acquisition.
His once beautiful peacock was now devoid of colour. Lucius stared in disbelief. “Draco,” he murmured, his temper rising. “That peacock cost me half a million galleons, not to mention the cost of shipping it here…”
Draco gulped visibly. He opened his mouth to answer but he was interrupted by a loud and very feminine “Lucius!”
Lucius and Draco looked up to see Narcissa staring at the peacock. Lucius cleared his throat, brushed his knees and straightened up. He smiled at his wife. “Happy anniversary?”
Narcissa approached them slowly. “Is that…is that a peacock?”
“Well…”
“Darling, it’s perfect!” Narcissa exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around her husband. “An albino peacock! However did you find it? It must have a cost a fortune. We’ll be the envy of the entire town!”
Narcissa showered his husband in kisses. “This is perfect,” she sighed as she went towards the peacock to inspect it. Lucius crooked his finger at Draco, who dutifully approached his father.
Lucius crouched down to Draco’s height. He took his wand out of his young son’s hand and replaced it with two golden galleons. “This will be our little secret, all right?”
Draco gave his father a sly smile and nodded. “Now back into the house with you, Draco,” Lucius said loudly enough for his wife to hear as he stashed his wand back into his robes.
“Dad? Can I have the Nimbus Two Thousand One?” Draco asked, walking into his father’s study. Lucius didn’t even look up from the papers he was studying. “If I’m going to become Slytherin’s new seeker this year, I need the best broom.”
“The broom you have is practically brand new,” Lucius answered.
“But Potter has the Nimbus Two Thousand.”
“You’re still the better flyer.”
“I’ll tell mom about the peacock.”
“Would you like seven? You’re team mates might appreciate the gesture.”
