Title: Too Late.
Genre: Fluff.
Characters: Ciaran O'Liathain, Helena Ravenclaw, Asthore & Ashling
Rating: PG
Word Count: 649 words
Summary: Helena and Ciaran teach Asthore & Ashling about love.
Author's Notes: Written for trivalent coz she wanted fluff and I luff her, so fluff it is. Also, I know nothing of ancient Irish traditions and what not and the animal totem thing is purely made up. Lastly, this is just random fluff. And not even good fluff at that.

A small fox stole its way across the meadow, silently weaving through bushes and other foliage. He was being called by some mysterious power and he didn't quite understand what or how, but he had to go and listen. The voice was a friend, not a master. He knew he would be safe if he listened to the voice. His feet made no noise as he hurried across grass and twigs and finally, emerged in the middle of a glade. Asthore crossed his arms smugly and looked at his sister. "Told you."

"Humph," was the reply. Helena smiled and kissed the top of Ashling's head as she continued to braid the girl's hair.

"You'll learn to call your animal soon enough, Ash," Helena said gently. "You're only six and Thor's very nearly a man now."

"Yep," Asthore said proudly, petting the fox with one hand. "I'll be a man in seven months."

"That's right," Helena said. "And you'll also have more responsibilities in the clan."

"Can you call an animal, too?" Asthore asked, picking the fox up and giving it a hug.

"Yes," Helena said as she tied the ends of Ashling's hair together with a ribbon. She leaned against a nearby tree and let the magic flow from her. She had had to learn this skill at an advanced age as she was not originally a part of the clan and knew nothing of its customs.

"Oh, look!" Ashling cried, pointing at the sky. Two hawks danced in mid-air. Helena smiled quizzically at the birds. She had only summoned one, but perhaps these two were bound together in a way that made them one? The two birds swooped down and landed neatly in front of Ashling. Helena reached out from behind her and pet the smaller one. The smaller one was female and her name was so ancient that no human alive could learn to say it properly. She was affectionate and let Helena stroke her neck gently. The larger one, a male, strong and dignified, stood nearby and watched his mate.

"I didn't know you could call two of them!" Asthore said, gazing at Helena in awe.

Helena opened her mouth to explain her theory of why she thought they could be considered one, when their clan leader arrived. Ashling jumped up and rushed towards him. "They are one," Ciaran explained as he picked Ashling up and swung her around.

"Two birds," Helena turned to Asthore and held up two fingers. "Bound closely together by love and respect that they become but one entity. One being. Whole as an individual, but incomplete without the other."

Asthore grinned at Helena before looking down at his fox. "Will he find his fox wife, too?"

Helena shrugged gently. "We do not know what the hands of time will bring, but we can hope that he does find true love."

"You and Ciaran are in love, right, Helena?" Ashling giggled as Ciaran put her down.

"Of course," Helena nodded as she stood up to greet her husband. "Like these hawks, Ciaran and I share a love that binds us closely together."

"A love given freely, a love that makes us one," Ciaran reached out for his wife. "Asthore, let your friend return home for you and your sister must return to yours."

"Aww," Asthore said sadly before he gave his fox a final squeeze and set it off on its way. He bowed respectfully at Ciaran and hugged Helena before grabbing his sister's arm and running off.

"Darling, aren't they?" Helena whispered, watching them run off.

"Mmm?" Ciaran pulled her close and Helena saw a wicked light in Ciaran's eyes. They sank down on the grass and Ciaran kissed her. "We could try making one of our own," he teased. "Right here even, if you like."

Helena laughed as she took his hand and laid it over her belly. "Too late."
