He found her under the tree she often visited. He could hear her crying.
"Are you all right?"
She glared at him.
"All right, stupid question," he muttered, stepping around the tree. "All men are idiots; you should know this by now."
She turned away and sniffed.
He reached into his pocket for a handkerchief and handed it to her. "Come on, yours is soaked."
She hesitated a moment before accepting the piece of cloth with a muttered thank you. They stood there for a while, the silence punctuated by the occasional sniffle coming from her small frame. She mumbled something.
"I beg your pardon?"
"I said you were right. The whole lot of you are bloody idiots," she muttered darkly.
He chuckled and came closer. "C'mere," he cooed, pulling her into his arms. "Shush now...stop crying..."
She swiped at her eyes angrily before looking up at him. Her nose was red and her eyes were tired from the effort. He smiled gently at her and smoothed the hair away from her cheeks.
"There. Can I have a smile now?"
She glared at him.
He chuckled lightly before bending closer to plant a kiss on her forehead. His lips were cool against her flushed skin. He lingered too long. She raised her head to look up at him. Grey eyes met blue. Their noses brushed, then touched.
One kiss was all it took.
