and HISTORIANS - DUDES! that is theorising beyond your data. just cos they show marks similar to butchering doesn't mean they WERE butchered, and even if they WERE dismembered in a way that suggests butchering, it doesn't mean they were EATEN. now, if there are TEETHMARKS in the bones - you know, scrapes and gnaw-marks, THEN i'll believe the cretans engaged in ritual cannabilism, which seems really ar odds with what we know not only of THEIR civilsation but would likely make them unique in a way that seems hard to credit. i do like the way the programmers decided that there might be something behind the myth, though - even if mary renault did it first *grins*

OMG THANK YOU. You have no idea how frustrated I get while watching these shows! I sit there and grit my teeth and correct them, while anyone else in the room rolls their eyes at me. GRAR. I mean, yeah, in context of the show it seemed like a reasonable possibility and one that certainly added to their claims...but they still jumped a shark on this one. I think their conclusion was: Athens = Reason. Crete = Brutality. Reason cuts Brutality. Ocean covers all.
