CHARACTER INFO
CHARACTER NAME: Mia Fey
SERIES: Phoenix Wright series
RESERVED: Y
WISHLIST: N

PERSONALITY: Mia is essentially good-natured, a friendly and kind woman who tends to give people the benefit of the doubt. She has an instinct for spotting lies and trickery, not always entirely reliable, but when she believes someone is telling the truth she will stick by them till the end. This passion made her a popular defense attorney; Mia is generally perceived as trustworthy, though the dishonest and manipulative may see her as naïve, and can take advantage of her if she isn’t careful.

Mia is driven by a fiery spirit and her determination to protect the innocent. Once she takes up someone’s cause, be it a client or a stranger she meets on the street, she will never abandon them or give up working to help them. This is not always a good thing; Mia has burned herself out on other peoples’ behalves, and when she fails she takes it terribly, often falling into a deep depression that is difficult to get out of. She has gotten better at recognizing hopeless cases, though she can still be a fall guy for a good sob story. Early on her determination was constantly getting her into trouble, but as she progressed in her career and in life she got better at recognizing when she is getting too emotionally involved in a situation and needs to back off.

As a first impression, Mia comes across as straightforward, friendly, and good-humored. She is honest and kind and will never try to make another person feel bad, but she’s no pushover. She believes in hard work and determination, and isn't afraid to get into a confrontation to defend anyone or anything she thinks worth defending.

TIMELINE: Shortly after her death in canon.

BACKGROUND: Born to a family of spirit mediums in the village of Kurain, Mia was the daughter of the Master of the village and her heir, meant to succeed her someday as a powerful spirit medium. Mia had a happy life growing up with her younger sister Maya, until her mother Misty, who had lent her abilities to the police to help solve a murder case, suddenly found herself discredited and ostracized in the public eye for failing to help bring a conviction. Misty Fey disappeared, leaving the sisters to be raised by the village. The incident left a deep impression on Mia and fueled her later decision to give up her place in the village and go to law school, passing on the title of Kurain Master to Maya. It was Mia's wish to become a defense attorney, pursuing justice for her innocent clients as well as somehow clearing her mother's name.

Young and idealistic, Mia emerged from law school as a prodigy student and nailed her first position as a rookie defense lawyer under the tutelage of Marvin Grossberg and alongside attorneys Robert Hammond and Diego Armando. In her first trial, she took the stand in defense of Terry Fawles, a childishly innocent man who was charged with the murder of a police officer named Valerie Hawthorne, with Diego acting as her mentor. In spite of her inexperience, Mia was quickly able to see through the lies of Terry's girlfriend Dahlia Hawthorne, Valerie's stepsister, and realize that she was actually behind the murder for which she was framing Terry. On the brink of clearing Terry's name and implicating Dahlia, Mia was horrified when Terry committed suicide on the stand by drinking a bottle of poison that Dahlia had given him. Her confidence as a defense attorney was shaken and she fell into a bout of depression, blaming herself for not only failing to prove her client's innocence, but failing to prevent his death. It was Diego who helped her through that time, reminding her that a lawyer never gives up. With his support, Mia recovered and decided that she would implicate and bring down Dahlia for her crimes no matter how long it took. For six months she and Diego worked together on the case, and during that time they became lovers. But their relationship was not fated to last, as Diego was poisoned and put into a coma six months after the Terry Fawles trial. Mia suspected Dahlia, but was never able to prove her guilt.

One year later, however, Mia found herself facing her lover’s murderer in court when she was hired to defend Phoenix Wright, who was accused of the murder of a fellow student, Doug Swallow. Wright’s girlfriend-none other than Dahlia Hawthorne-was brought in to testify in the case, and the evidence was stacked highly against him. But Mia, suspecting Dahlia’s involvement in this murder case as well and determined to bring her down, fought passionately for Phoenix, and in the end managed not only to prove that Phoenix was innocent, but that Dahlia was the real murderer of Doug Swallow, and linked to the poisoning of Diego Armando as well.

Having achieved some measure of closure in the case of her lover’s poisoning, Mia continued at her work for several more years, even opening her own law firm, Fey & Co. At that time, she also took on Phoenix Wright--once Dahlia's hapless boyfriend, now an idealistic graduate of law school--as her protege, as she had once been Grossberg's (and Diego's). His past association with Dahlia made it a difficult choice, but knowing how a person's life could be changed by the people around them, she decided to take a chance on him--not that she meant to go easy on him as a mentor, of course. For several years Mia molded her protege, sometimes literally beating her knowledge of the justice system into his head. Her belief in him was gratified, as Phoenix became a budding lawyer as dedicated to truth, justice and protecting the innocent as she was. She took great pride in seeing him win his first case.

It was in the midst of that triumph that Mia's life was abruptly cut short. Just after Phoenix's first case, Mia was murdered by a criminal she was investigating for connections to her mother, the once-renowned spiritual medium Misty Fey, and her sister Maya, also a spirit medium, was accused of the crime. Phoenix successfully proved Maya innocent and from then on Maya worked as Phoenix's assistant, channeling Mia's ghost for assistance whenever necessary.

ABILITIES: Mia’s abilities are fairly commonplace, though they have helped a great deal with her success as a defense attorney: she’s a good listener, a good debater, and has a knack for recognizing talent. Coming from a family of spirit mediums, she is also open to spiritual and psychic matters; she can sense the presence of supernatural beings such as ghosts and is capable of spirit channeling, or inviting a dead soul to possess her body temporarily.
