Okay everyone, I need some help here. I've got a few different options I'm thinking about for the future, but I need some other opinions on it. And please, do give me what you really think. I'm open to discussion; actually I really want some discussion in trying to figure this all out ( Read more... )

Hmm... Well, it's definitely a big decision. And I know you don't really want to hear the 'whatever you think is best' thing, but that really is what it comes down to. You have to figure out what you REALLY want to do and focus everything on getting to that goal ( ... )

haha. Well at least you tried XD.

But yeah, that's definitely what I'm thinking about the grad school option right now. And the thing is, with what I'm studying, I'd very likely being doing some study abroad with it. So I almost think it might be better to go with option three right now and see what study abroad options I can get with that and kind of get on a career path. Then I can study, learn, and get the money together for grad school.

About the work visa, I don't think I could do that. They're really strict about it. Even going to school when you have a work visa is considered a 'job' and you have to get permission or something I think. It's really complicated. And I just don't know that I want to deal with that. I knew plenty of people that did private tutoring even though it was illegal, but that just isn't my thing. Even if it wasn't illegal, I'm just not the type of person for that sort of tutoring I don't think.

Yeah, so... considering all of that, the third option may be your best bet. And, like you said, you can find a school where you can get your certification and continue with your language stuff at the same time. So it's kind of a two-birds-one-stone kinda deal. ^_^

That is what I'm seriously considering. But then I have to figure out if I want to stay in-state out-of-state or what. I think it might be good to get out of here, but starting all over in new place is so hard. I should go to CA then and hang out with Melody maybe XD. My friend from Japanese class had talked to me before about a school in Texas that has a really good Japanese program and they also have Korean. But if I go out of state, then I'm getting certification out of state. So it depends on whether or not I want to teach here or not. So many decisions!

Hi,

I'm stuck in the same boat as you are, but I did want to give you some advice on alternative teaching programs and the availability of social studies/history teacher jobs since I've been doing tons of research on it lately along with the help of my adviser. Alternative programs just to receive your full certification take a 1 yr to a 1.5 yrs. They typically aren't very expensive and almost every state has one. However, when it comes to teaching jobs available for history and/or social studies for the younger grades there is not much availability and the spots are very competitive. I've searched nation wide and the top fields that are coming up are: math, science, english, and special ed.

However, that's not to say that you won't land a job teaching it might just take longer than you would think.

I didn't know it was the competitive. I've looked into lateral entry before and saw that it should be too hard to do, but I didn't think finding a job would be too difficult. Is that just for elementary, middle, high, or is it all around, do you know?

I was looking primarily at middle thru high school.

Alright then. I'll just have to look around quite a bit I guess then. That is the target age I'm hoping to teach, so I'll just have to see what I can find when I get there.

Thank you!

No, I don't think I want to be a professor. It's not that I have anything against teaching (obviously) but I just don't see myself getting a PhD and then researching and writing while being a professor ( ... )
