Hi guys it's the final instalment of Melbourne Time. If you want to ask a question before the game opens this is your final opportunity.
Now somebody sent me a private message asking me about summoning and the like. Because sharing this information private is silly I've decided to give you a primer on how summoning works. Here you go:
There is a rare art in the world, where one can reach into the worlds beyond those we inhabit and tap into the powers of great and legendary beings. These creatures take physical form (either for a moment or for a greater span of time), acting according to the will of the magician, before vanishing back whence they came. These people are called Summoners, and it is a controversial practice. Both the Church of Glabados and Yevon heavily restrict the knowledge of Summoning to their own forces and guard it jealously. Indeed, the Yevonite religion revolves around the power of Summoning, using it as the method in which one can placate and defeat Sin. Summoners who are not firmly aligned with the Church are often demonized as being in league with dark powers, and showing that one possesses the ability to Summon is often a quick way to be branded a Heretic.
Due to this pressure, the independent Summoner havens are difficult to find and often remote. Centuries of oppression have given them cause to be wary of strangers, as they could presage a mob of torch-wielding peasants, or worse, an assault from the Inquisition.
The Empire generally eschews Summoning itself, instead focusing on using Espers to advance their Magitek research. A closely-guarded secret of Shinra is that they possess Materia that can allow one to summon many of these creatures. Only their most trusted agents are given these Materia to use, and even then, instructed to find ways to ensure that they are not caught using it. SeeD's controversial method of using Guardian Forces has not yet gained the attention of the Church, but those who know say it will only be a matter of time before it becomes a point of contention.
SUMMONS, HOW DO I LEARN THEM!?
You do not need to be from Mist, Madain Sairi or Spira to know how to summon/call. There are rogue summoner/callers out there who can teach you how to do this. Or you can be affiliated with the Church.
If you are a summoner in another faction, like say the Heretics, then yes you are automatically a heretic. You're in the Heretics! Does the Church actively go around hunting every hobo with a stick who knows how to call a Goblin? No. They have other things to do. Are you going to attract attention if you walk up to the Inquisition and burn them with Ifrit. Yes.
Summoners/Callers are disdained by the jerkface Empire. They're jerkfaces. But if they have a Summoner/Caller on a leash - particularly when you've got Xanatos Pragmatist Emperor Mateus running the show, if you produce results and are competent he doesn't give a crap.
In the Rebellion, people are far less judgemental. Although they may think you're a bit weird.
In the Heretics you've found a home.
The game will not be married to making life hell for Summoners and Callers, but with awesome powers comes RP producing responsibilities. You have been forewarned.
NOW THEN this isn't just about Summoning. Please forward your questions if you have any.
