I think a better statement would be to say that Tifa is in love with what Cloud represents, which is her childhood and Nibelheim brought back to her.

YES. As with the assertions that Tifa rebuilds her world around Cloud, namely, around the fragments of her childhood. It explains Marlene and (if you think of AC as canon) Denzel.

FFVII had the opportunity to actually not be about romantic love, considering its scale. That a love story was appended to it actually diminished its significance in my eyes. Well said, especially in your conclusion.

Tifa is my favorite FF character of all time, and I've spent a lot of time thinking on her characterization both in canon and in fandom. I do think that Tifa is a nice person. Not everyone in FF7 is a nice person, but Tifa's nice. But then again, so is Red XIII. Aeris is nice too. It's not just a matter of Tifa being nice - she's polite to everyone just because that's the way she was brought up, being the mayor's daughter and having good manners. But the way she treats Cloud is totally different - it's as if he and she were both fragile. Which they are, in a sense.
