At the small campsite within the caves of Narshe, everyone was asleep except for Locke and Celes. She had motioned for him to follow her to the other side of a rock wall, out of eye and ear shot from their sleeping comrades.
"I noticed you had a bit of trouble with your magic today," she commented, her voice not giving away whether she was criticizing or mocking him.
"I know, I know," Locke grumbled, looking away from her stare. In a particularly frenzied battle earlier that day, Locke had tried to down several flying monsters with with a fira spell, only to succeed in starting a small forest fire. He knew his aim had been off, and was unable to redirect the magic when the creatures swooped out of the fiery path, but then again...
"Not all of us have been able to use magic for years," was his retort to her unspoken critique.
Celes could have responded to that slight barb with anger or silence or even mockery, but she knew he was right, and had intended to tell him that. She had not expected for him to act so hurt about the matter, so she decided that instruction would be the best course of action.
She held out her hand and whispered softly, a bright flame bursting to life in her hand.
"Touch this," she said to him. When he hesitated, she rolled her eyes and told him "I'm not going to burn your hand off."
Locke carefully reached out to the flame and found it only to be warm, not hot as his eyes told him it was.
"You can control every aspect of magic," Celes explained, "you can make fire hot or barely warm, make ice freeze a monster or use it to cut by making the ice sharp and hard. You can control magic from the moment it leaves your hands until it reaches your target, make it swerve or go around objects or separate onto several different paths. It takes practice, true, but the first part is to learn how to feel the magic."
Celes let the flame wander up onto Locke's hand. "Picture it travelling up your arm, imagine a warm trail, not hot."
Locke did as she instructed, imagining the feel of the warm flame running up his arm before the fire began to move on the path he imagined.
"Very good," Celes said, smiling. "You are getting the hang of it. Once you practice enough, you'll be able to do things like this."
The flame suddenly disappeared from sight, but Locke could still feel it on his skin. The warmth began to run lines all around his body, not burning skin or clothes, just leaving a trail of heat.
"Amazing," Locke breathed, trying to stand very still as the sensation began to increase, breaking off into two, three, four different paths, all encircling his body at the same time.
Celes' smile grew wider at Locke's reaction. She had meant to teach him, even maybe tease him a bit, but the sight of him standing there, trembling slightly as she suddenly directed the flames in different paths made her want to go just a little further.
Locke gasped as he felt the flames starting to push inside of him, through some very personal and very sensitive areas. He looked at Celes, wide eyed, but couldn't form the words as the fire began to create intense sensations inside of him. His nerves felt like they were sparking with each warm wave she sent through him. He was beginning to flush, his body heat rising from both the flames and the pleasure they were coaxing forth. He could feel it all through his body now, the damned flame somehow caressing him in just the right places until he actually had to moan softly at the sensation. Hotter and hotter now, it felt as though the fire was suddenly all concentrated in his lower body now, building up to...to...
"No!" he whimpered as his body suddenly went cold, the fire all at once gone from his body, leaving him on the very edge of release. He saw that Celes was still smiling, and just as he was about to plead for her to continue, the fire suddenly reappeared all at once. He felt the heat engulf his body and felt it pour forth from him as his eyes saw the blinding white of the hottest flames.
Somehow, when his eyes had focused again, he found himself on his hands and knees on the cave floor. Celes was trying to help him up, a mix of amusement and concern on her face.
"Are you all right?" she asked him, helping him to stand. Perhaps she had gone too far?
Her fears were assuaged when he smiled and nodded. "I'm great," he said, laughing. "That was...that was really incredible." A small flush came to his cheeks. "I can't wait until I can handle magic the way you do."
"I'll be sure to give you another lesson tomorrow," she said, also laughing. She never thought she would enjoy teaching someone so much. Perhaps tomorrow she would instruct him in the use of ice magic.
