01. Have you ever been sorted into a Harry Potter sorting community on LiveJournal?
No, I haven't - I had thought about joining a few, but got the feeling that most of them were a bit biased in their sorting or in other aspects of their community. It didn't seem right to join that kind of role-playing community unless I liked what I saw.
02. If you answered "yes" to number one, which Hogwarts house were you sorted into? Also, if you can, please provide a link to your application.
Not applicable.
03. How did you find this community? If you were referred by someone else, please state their LJ name (and, if possible, their camp).
I was referred by the lovely
daintress, who is a Death Eater, when she mentioned it in her LJ. I hopped over here to check it out (she had written an article and it was interesting to read) and I decided to apply.
04. Why would you be an addition to either the Order of the Phoenix or the Death Eaters? In which subcommunities could you be a valuable asset? (consider your strengths and weaknesses in graphics, roleplaying and discussion, sorting, your interests, and your availability)
I would be an addition to either team with my dedication and my ability to adjust to whatever situation I'm in. In the [SS/HG] drabble community
grangersnape100, I chose to work as a spy, and I wrote drabbles for both teams, so I have a feel for both the Order and the Death Eaters.
I make icons and banners, particularly for icontests, so I would fit well in the graphics area. I have never roleplayed before, but I'm definitely interested in learning how to roleplay and in joining in. I write often, both fanfiction and original works. I'm able to participate in discussions and help out in the sorting, and I'd put a lot of effort into that. I'm also very available - I'm online often, with a lot of free time, and I enjoy participating in communities.
05. Make a paragraph-long highlight summary of both the Order’s and the Death Eaters’ characteristics and doctrine. Each paragraph should be no longer than ten lines.
The Order of the Phoenix is motivated by the desire to stop evil from spreading and from wreaking havoc. Its members are often characterized by their sense of value and loyalty, and also, often, by their dedication to the greater good. The Order's main goal is to prevent the Dark Lord from taking over the wizarding world and turning it into a dark world full of pain, fear, and tragedy.
The Death Eaters are motivated by different things - for some, it is most definitely power. Some follow the Dark Lord out of fear, and others follow the Dark Lord simply because they believe in what he says, or have never thought to question him. The Death Eaters are dedicated to purifying the wizarding world - ridding it of "tainted blood" and attempting to keep magic in its purest form. Many Death Eaters have never been taught another way of looking at purebloods/muggleborns/halfbloods and are caught in their traditional ideals, handed down through generations.
06. Identify yourself with one (ex)-Order Member and one Death Eater, and explain your choices.
I'm surprising myself when I say I probably relate to Nymphadora Tonks most from the Order. She's clumsy, at times, and she's incredibly erratic, but when it comes down to protecting people and getting into the heart of the fight, she's ready. She's also unique, and she can use that to her advantage.
Of the Death Eaters, I relate most to Bellatrix Black. While I'm not really insane, I am attracted to power and the adrenaline rush from fighting. I am also vain, sometimes, and can be intimidating if I want to. Also, Bellatrix stayed in Azkaban, her mind becoming damaged, yet she remained loyal to the Dark Lord. I would definitely remain loyal to whoever I was serving in that kind of situation.
07. Which emotion are you least able to control? Please explain. (This can be a "positive" or "negative" emotion.)
I would say probably protectiveness, if that could be called an emotion. If not, it might go under compassion or possessiveness, but I think protectiveness says it well. If anyone threatens or insults anyone I love or care about, all hell breaks loose. I'm incredibly easy to anger in that respect, and I go straight into defending that person, whether it's physically or by words. Even if I know the loved one isn't really insulted or hurt by it, I need to make sure that I do my part and really do something to avenge or defend the person that is close to me.
08. What are three of your best talents? (You are encouraged to think beyond the physical for at least two of your answers.)
One of my best talents would be working well under pressure. I think my best work, whether it's in writing or otherwise, comes from working at the last minute, and I don't stress out or panic under pressure.
Another best talent is my versatility in physical exercise-ish stuff. I can play soccer, swim, fence, anything if I want to, and I'll most likely enjoy it a lot.
The last best talent that I have is looking beyond what is there. I can see a person and watch what they do, and I can tell if they have a different motive or if they are lying. This goes beyond just people - in situations, I can see the main causes of tension, or different possible solutions.
09. What are three qualities of an ideal leader, and why? Please describe a person (literary, historical, etc.) who exemplifies these characteristics.
One quality is respect. The leader should respect his followers, because it garners respect for him, and also because it just treats them like human beings, putting the leader and followers on the same level.
Another quality is openness. A leader that does not stay single-minded, but can alter and adapt to different situations and obstacles that arise. This is good because it helps keep things constantly moving and prevents the leader from being stuck in one situation and stubbornly sticking to it.
The final quality is bravery. Sometimes, leaders hide behind his/her followers and simply work behind the scenes, hoping to stay safe that way. Leaders should be able to get in the front of their people and fight with them, knowing that they may be hurt but willing to take that risk.
Looking over the qualities, I choose Braveheart as a leader who exemplifies these characteristics. He defended his country, fought with his people, and never failed to garner their respect by giving them his respect first.
10. Would you ever "switch sides" in a situation? If so, under which conditions? Examples/hypothetical scenarios will be helpful!
While I hate to think about it this way, I think I might - but only under extreme circumstances. Say, for instance, my family or someone I loved was being held hostage on my account, I would definitely "switch sides" (though that really doesn't make much sense). Family always comes first. Also, if I suddenly found out that what I was fighting for was against my own beliefs, or I suddenly realized that it wasn't what I really wanted to fight for, I would switch sides. That's if the other side is fighting for something that I believe in. But if I was being tortured or something happened only to me, in order to get me to change sides, I wouldn't change, as long as I still believed in what I fought for.
11. If placed on a mission, would you rather operate alone, with a friend, with a small group of friends or with a large force, and why?
I think I would rather operate alone. Most times I trust only myself, and I just get very uneasy if there's another person that I need to rely on - if they make a mistake, it drives me crazy. Also, it's much easier to get a job done when you only need to worry about yourself - if I had to go with other people, I'd probably be thinking about their welfare and that could distract me from whatever it is that I need to do. I think less dangerous missions could be done with a friend, as company or for back-up. Unless a group of friends has made a sound, strategic plan that involves every single member and their individual skills, I'd rather not deal with big groups.
12. Would you rather be convicted of betrayal of your peers, or betrayal of your family, and why?
Definitely my peers. I can handle anything that comes by peers, but I think betrayal of my family would be too much to handle. I've grown up with my family, I love every single member of it, and I trust them with all my heart. I think it would be the greatest shock if that ever happened. Also, I think betrayal of your family is something that sticks for a long time and can't be forgotten easily. Peers aren't as close and supportive all your life - it really is the family that comes through no matter what happens.
13. Write a short call to action for a modern social or political cause you support. (Please refrain from using Harry Potter situations!)
In Africa, children everywhere are starving - dying from malnutrition, disease, and other horrible tragedies. Many never reach adulthood and often those that survive have lives filled with violence, betrayal, and despair. Some may never know the simple pleasures (that many people take for granted) of having enough to eat for one day, for having the ability to go to school, or to have a better life for their own children than they had to live.
Even small donations go a long way. No child deserves to die, no matter how far away he or she is from us - please consider it, on behalf of every person that lives today. Help give them a chance to live each day.
