It was...slightly distressing to know that he'd been wrong about Squall. True, he didn't know the boy very well, but he'd thought they'd been making progress...And he thought he'd known what was going on. Had they already dealt with Ultimecia? And if they hadn't, which he was almost positive was the case, why were they *here* when they should be looking for her?
Laguna paced the length of his room again, staring at the face of the helmet in his hands. The armor was...different; nothing he could really recall wearing before, but it wasn't totally uncomfortable. A bit noisy though. He frowned; was it wrong of him to be thinking about how the sounds he made when he walked echoed off the walls instead of how he was going to face his son? He realized, just an hour ago, that he'd almost grown accustomed to the fact that they'd have to fight. Even if Lenne had said she wouldn't let it happen, he couldn't risk the girl getting hurt for such a foolish reason; Squall wouldn't listen to her.
He set the helmet down on the bed and fumbled with tying his hair back before putting the last pieces of armor on. Sigh. Time to get it over with...
Squall had taken only the best of his SeeDs. They were trained in the art of being stealthy. Of course, they’d taken out a few guards, but that wasn’t all that important...
Until Squall got a report back from one of his teams saying that one of the guards had managed to escape. He swore under his breath and dispatched another team down the hall to the left. He took the hall ahead of them alone, knowing it was a bad idea and knowing there wasn’t a choice left. The alarm, such as it was, had gone up and their cover had been blown. Now it was only a matter of time before Hyne started tightening the noose on her “pets.” Squall had to find them first.
For a moment or two, he'd been tempted to go after the SeeD that had come with Squall instead of facing the commander directly, but... They were less of a threat, really, and he was sure that Hyne would be able to deal with them herself; he wasn't the only bit of security around.
He passed a few of them, who where, thankfully, otherwise occupied, and turned the corner at the end of the hall. Hmm.
Squall rounded the corner from the other end and came face to face with... What the hell was Laguna wearing? He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head to the side. What the...? Then he relaxed and sighed, lowering his weapon and approaching his father. At least he was alive still.
Tsk. As Squall's weapon went down, Laguna's came out. Maybe...maybe this wouldn't be as hard as he'd thought after all. Not really, anyway. In the end, Squall would probably just get called away. They're retreat or...something. Wasn't that how it went? And even if it didn't...well...he had promised her.
That made him stop cold. “What... are you doing?” he asked. This was wrong. This was terribly, horribly and utterly wrong.
He shook his head a little. "I was so sure that you wouldn't come here; that you had better things to do." He took another couple steps forward. "You do, don't you? Shouldn't you be looking for Ultimecia? Why...*why* did you have to come here and bother us?" Frown. "She hasn't done anything to warrant an invasion, you know..."
Squall’s jaw dropped. His train of thought went something like this: I am not hearing this...
My father is a moron.
Please someone tell me my mother had an affair while he was in Esthar.
What sort of drugs is he on?
...Can I have some?
“Have you lost your mind?” he snapped. “Ultimecia is here! Who do you think Hyne’s favorite puppet is?”
"I haven't seen her. I think I'd know if she were here." He knew just about everything that went on now, at least he thought he did. What reason was there for Hyne not to tell him? Why would she lie to him? She wouldn't...so there. "I think you're mistaken. I think you should leave now."
Squall’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not leaving until I find Irvine,” he said in a low, dangerous tone. “So I suggest you get out of the way so I can do that.”
"I suggest that you *leave*." He put himself more squarely in front of Squall, blocking any further progress down the hallway. Irvine? The name sounded familiar, but he'd never been too good with names and faces of people he'd barely met. Either way, if the person in question was here, he couldn't very well just let him go. He wasn't quite sure why he couldn't, but...he knew that Hyne wouldn't be too pleased if he did.
“You’re out of your mind,” Squall snapped, verging on yelling, but not quite reaching it. He took a step back. “She did this to you...” I’m going to kill her... “I’m not going to fight you.”
Laguna shook his head. "You don't understand; how could you?" He couldn't. He'd never be able to. She *needed* him. He was...worth something here. He had a purpose here. It wasn't like Esthar; he wasn't just for show. He took a step forward. Not going to fight? Then he'd better start leaving before he had no other choice.
“No, you don’t understand.” Squall lifted his gunblade. He wasn’t going to fight, but that didn’t mean he was going to take this lying down. He felt Ari prodding the back of his mind and then he appeared at his side as a large lion - the form Squall seemed to be most comfortable with.
“Be careful Chosen, She has Knighted him,” he said and Squall snorted.
“Well, that explains everything.” He narrowed his eyes at Laguna. “Get out of the way. She’s kidnapping people and killing people and I’ve had it up to here with the both of them. Get. Out. Of. The. Way.”
"Always into other people's business, aren't you? Couldn't get enough of being the hero, could you? No one here needs to be saved; everything is fine. Run along." He lifted his sword again. Fine then. "Leave us alone."
Squall winced. No one needed to be saved? “God, do you even pay attention to what’s going on around you? Get the fuck out of my way!” That was it, his temper snapped. He was going to do something violent here in a moment.
Of course he did, but just like everyone else, Squall thought he was oblivious. And to think, he'd spent months agonizing over the fact that he hadn't been able to go back for the boy when he'd found out what had happened to Raine. Twitch. Scowl. "Go. Home." And he swung at him.
See? It wasn't so hard after all...
“What’ll you do if I don’t?” Squall sneered. Fed up was what he was. He was just starting to like the man too. Pity. “Ground me?” Pfft.
Oh, that was funny. Ground him. Yes, yes he would. 6 feet under..."Something like that."
Something occurred to Squall just then. His mother was dead and his father was batshit. He’d gone from being an orphan to finding a father to being, essentially, an orphan again.
He closed his eyes. That hit home harder than it should really. The man had always been an idiot, granted, previously, he’d been a well-intentioned idiot. This was just... He snarled and lashed out with a Firaga spell.
I’ll make myself an orphan.
That was...hot. Especially when he was clad in metal. Ow. He was fairly certain that he couldn't retaliate with any spells of his own, so he took advantage of Squall's less guarded casting stance. >_> Ha. Eat. Sword. Bitch.
A sword? Damn, pop, do you even know how to use that thing? Don’t make me laugh. Squall brought up his gunblade to block it, telling Ari to stay out of it. This was personal now.
Which meant he was going to slip up eventually, but not right now. The red haze of anger settled comfortably over his vision and he countered.
Of course he knew how to use it. He'd been practicing. See? I can do this just as well as you can, brat. And yes, keep your ugly pet out of this. >O
Squall moved again and blocked. Practice all you want old man, it won’t help you here. He snarled something as the pit of his stomach started twisting. I hate him... for being stupid?
That was a really fucking stupid reason to hate someone, he realized. Hello mouth, chew on a foot.
Oh really? Then why am I doing so well all of a sudden, hm? Oh, did you have an attack of conscience? Pity. Heh. You hate me? How novel. It wasn't as if he hadn't always known. Squall never more than put up with him before; probably because he felt he had to. Well...he didn't anymore.
You...stupid...stubborn...
Thank whatever god exists that I’m not like you.
Squall jumped back and cast sleep on him. It might work - it might not work - he had other spells in his library just in case.
No! No sleeping! Bastard...What, was he afraid to finish this? Of course he was. He lashed out with his sword again as he stumbled forward. If he could just...get him once...Just once...then it wouldn't be a total waste.
Laguna hit the floor of the hallway, ungracefully, with a loud crash. Zzz. Bitch.
Squall looked down at him, breathing heavily. He should... call for back up and then have the SeeDs take him back, but...
Hell, he couldn’t leave him here, no matter how much he thought... Bah. He reached down to the little communicator and made the call, swallowing hard as he did so and refusing to look at the prone figure on the floor. He’d say he was sorry, but he wasn’t and somehow, that made it worse.
