He’s seen it. Mister Wesley has seen it. It’s like easy for me to keep it in, but Marilee is only five. She don’t now yet. She don’t know why daddy left us and why mommy left. We’s different, we’s not like other humans. We’s…demonic, bad, evil, not good. Grandma sure as heck kept telling us that. Kept saying we don’t belong here, we don’t belong in this world. Mommy wanted us to be human. ‘S why she left us, though, cause she couldn’t protect us. ‘S why they killed her, and Daddy. They left us.
And now he’s seen it. Mister Wesley did and he knows. Seen the look on his face, he was shocked. Hid it soon enough okay, but he’s seen it. Fear was taking over in me and I’d scooted closer to Marilee. Wanted to strangle her for showing what we was. He was gonna get rid of us, I just knew it. Even if he said he wouldn’t. Would he tell Miss Cordelia? I’m sure he was gonna and then we was gonna have to go again. Didn’t wanna go, I liked Mister Wesley and Miss Cordy, they cared.
Kinda down, I followed after Mister Wesley meekly. He still had Marilee in the cart and kept dropping thing in it as if we was really gonna stay with him. We wasn’t, I just knew it. He was just waiting for a good time to leave us, just like Mommy had. Just like Daddy had. Oh! He’s not gonna kill us is he? Just like they done with Mom and Dad? I eyed him carefully, ready to grab Marilee and run if that were the case. Can’t trust anyone. Specially not someone who dresses like *that* I mean, hello? Stuffy much?
But he didn’t do anything other then shop, and then grab Marilee to put her on his hip. “Alicia, Sweetheart?” he said, and I blinked up at him. Gosh, he was like way tall. “Could you perhaps carry the bag with clothes and the pajama’s? I’ve my hands full.”
“Okay,” I said softly, grabbing the bag. Ew, those aint pajama’s, those are… There are no words. Wish Miss Cordy were here, she’d know what to get me. I’m totally a princess, daddy said so. I don’t wear…green. Sighing, I followed after Mister Wesley and Marilee back to his car. We gots the things stashed away quick and then he drove off. Was getting scared again. Now would be a good chance of him to totally get rid of us.
“And here we are,” Mister Wesley announced cheerfully while getting out of the car.
Huh? This don’t look like some home. Y’know, where they put bad evil kids. Looks like an apartment building. I got out of the car, accepting the bag from Mister Wesley again. He grabbed the other bag and Marilee’s hand, starting for the building.
“I know it’s not much, but you two can sleep in the guestroom. The bed it big enough. And the first thing we’ll do is get some food into you both and a descent shower before that,” he rambled on while we trudged up the stairs. He’s not getting rid of us? Huh.
When we arrived at his place, I wrinkled my nose. Books like totally everywhere, stuffy furniture and does the sun even *know* this place? Geeze, like a total lost cause this was. Man. I dumped the bag on the sofa, plain brown and boring and glanced around some more. Guess you can’t judge a man by his…place. I still liked Mister Wesley, like totally a lot.
“Cwan I use the smelly soap,” Marilee asked timidly as Mister Wesley got the food into the kitchen. Okay, shower first apparently.
“I can so wash myself,” I quickly blurted out. “I’m a big girl!”
Mister Wesley smiled at me with that indulgent smile adults get when they think we’re cute. Ugh. “Of course you are,” he said, patting my head. “And you can shower after Marilee.” Suree, then he can still keep an eye on me! Eh, never mind, I wanna keep my eye on him too, just to make sure he aint running off and leaving us.
“Come on then girls. And after we’ve had dinner, then perhaps we can try calling Miss Cordelia.”
Oh! Yay! Now things are looking up. Now I hope he don’t tell her about what we is and they dun leave us. Other then that? All I care about is a shower and dinner…and worming my way out of thems gross green pj’s.
They wouldn’t like get rid of us right? Right?
