The plains, midmorning after the stampede

He'd offered to scout for the chie- for Alder, to find them a safe place to rest where they wouldn't be trampled by runaway hooves. But Moonfall wasn't sure how safe anywhere would be, out here where the horizon was so far and so strange. Ashes loped steadily along the great shagbeasts's backtrail, Moonfall peering to either side for signs of ( Read more... )

Gust and Moth still weren't sure about what had happened. They were still a bit bewildered and sitting close together for warmth and comfort.
When the sending came, both their ears perked and their eyes brightened.

"Trees?" Gust asked.

"Water?" Moth asked.

They looked around at the others.

"Can we go?" Gust asked.

Heartstorm finished checking the bindings on her family's belongings, and mounted after exchanging gentle ear-nips with Clear-Thought. Wanderlust was trembling, but she allowed Silent to seat himself on her back without shying away. The silver-eyed elf was still shaking himself, but he could ride.

Lightstone chose to give Hardhead a break and walk instead. He scratched his wolf-friend behind the ears, giving the appearance of being occupied while he did something else. **Alder,** he lock-sent to the young chief, **I want to ask you something.**

**I think I must,** Lightstone returned a bit dryly. **I didn't miss your send after I said "Not now, Alder!" Everyone was running for their lives; why focus on something other than that? Any of us could have died at any moment.** The rockshaper shuddered. **If my aim wasn't what it is, poor Whistler might have been trampled. What if someone had needed you while you were distracted?**

He left the question-cum-scolding at that. It was enough for Alder to dwell on.

"Come on now, everyone," he called aloud, adding a cheerful note to his voice. "Moonfall was good enough to find us a path, so it's best we take it."

Dusk was still shaking a bit, but she and Coppertail both stood and gathered themselves. Dusk gave the she-wolf a scratch behind the ears before hopping onto her back.

She looked back down at the ground to be sure she didn't drop anything and shook her head slightly. The grass where she'd been sitting appeared to be greener and healthier looking than the rest. She thought it was just her eyes playing tricks on her. Coppertail moved to stand near Gust and Moth, but still away from them as well.

Gradually, Whistler was able to sit up on Nipper's back. The world had finally stopped shaking and her eyes adjusted to the stillness.

The promise of trees and sweet water made her nearly howl. She was tired and scared, and parched.
When Lightstone gave the order to go, she followed him willingly, trustingly. She gave a backward glance at Alder, feeling guilty, but he needed to prove himself as a chief, and Lightstone was her elder.

Moss trotted up next to Whisper, still flexing her hands where they'd been clenched in Slaptail's ruff. "High Ones, I'll die happy if I never see another of those beasts! Are you all right?"

Whistler slowly looked at Moss. Personally, she agreed. If she never saw another one of those beasts, all flailing hooves and loud bellows...she shook herself.

Looking herself over, she held out her arms to Moss, displaying her scratches from flying debries. That was the least of her worries.
Bending her head, her hair hiding her face, she answered.

"I thought I was going to die..."

Hugs being impractical when they were both mounted, Moss clasped the other elf's hand and tried to look reassuring. "You didn't die. Nobody died. Maybe it'll be a little safer among the trees. And maybe we'll even find game tonight."

"Shade! Water!" Nightglow clapped her hands and laughed delightedly, a sound seldom heard as of late. She quickly jumped to her feet. Noticing Alder's back stiffening, she trotted over to him and took his arm.

"Come on, Alder, we could use the shade! I think we're all about as red as a dreamberry!" she said with a sunny smile.

Nightglow draped her arm around Alder's waist, returning the hug, and began fingering the hem of his shirt. She studied it for a moment as they walked and then turned her gaze to the others, inspecting their garments.

"I can't wait for us to find a new home. We're all so raggedy looking." She sighed and shook her head. "I know there are more important things to worry about, but that's the only thing I can really do, so that's what I'll worry about."
