I guess I'm allowed to talk about this now ...

It's been shooting around the science news a couple of days now. It is conceivable that my experiment may have discovered a new fundamental particle. For anyone who cares about abstract theories about how the universe works, this is a huge deal. If the people who discovered this are right this will be something beyond the pale, something which ( Read more... )

Wow! Those are some truely exciting results!

BTW, since this should be reproducable with lower energy colliders are you guys working with another particle lab to reproduce this result yet?

Yeah, probably lower energy colliders could have produced this same result if it is new physics. Unfortunately, I think all those lower energy colliders have shut down because they "aren't competitive" anymore so their funding got cut. There is a big rival experiment out here that's working on the same collider using a different detector though. I'm sure they're madly analyzing their data looking for this right now. This is a very difficult measurement to get right, but if they see the same excess and it has the same lifetime distribution using different hardware then it's very likely to be real. If not then it's probably a mistake we made.

By the way, I should specify that I had no involvement in this project myself. If it's true then I get to bask in the reflected glory because I am one of the hundreds of other people on the same experiment. If it's false then I get to bask in the reflected shame. ;)

Cool! I hope it turns out to be a real result.
