The Library, Sunday Afternoon

Apr 15, 2012 13:47

Sholeh walked into the library and stopped, filled with wonder. So many books here! So much knowledge! She bet she could find the answer to any question she could come up with, right here in this toom--and then a thousand more questions besides. And those answers, too!

"This place is wonderful," she breathed ( Read more... )

Ugh. Hadn't even started classes yet, and this workshop thing that Lewis had signed him up for was asking, no, demanding that the students have readings done before the first lesson. What was this? Some kind of university or something?

Sparkle had been under the impression that he'd been going to, you know, summer camp or something. Shows what he knew, huh?

"Somebody looks like she's never seen the inside of a library before," he mused, all too eager to do something, anything that didn't involve Dewey Decimals. What was up with those things, anyhow?

"I haven't!" Sholeh said, still looking about with wonderment. "Not like this, anyway!"

Old stories of Tryadnea spoke of beautiful cities they'd once had, shining centers of learning and art. Those had long since fallen into ruin, given over to the creeping deserts as the Tryad fled, willing to sacrifice beauty for the sake of sheer survival. Other anchors had come back with stories of libraries like this as well, but few had had the chance to visit. And as they failed to anchor Tryadnea to those landscapes, the wonders that they'd found had been left behind as their home continued to drift.

"It's huge! And amazing! And so full of books!"

That would be the definition of a library, Sholeh.

"So they tell me," Sparkle mused, craning his head back to look up at the ceiling. Because... well, that wasn't where the books were, but it wasn't like there was some sort of rule saying that he wasn't allowed to look that way or anything. "You find me a library full of sharks or butterflies or pepper shakers or something, and then I'll be impressed. This one just looks like every other one, Girly."

Sparkle was all class.

"Sholeh," Sholeh corrected. "Don't you like books? They're how you find out about everything!"

*No, Sholeh,* Zhahar teased. *It's how you find out about everything.*

=That and asking incessant questions,= Zeela grumbled.

::Shhhh!:: Sholeh retorted, only just remembering not to say that aloud for the boy to hear. ::I'm making a new friend! ...Maybe.::

=I don't like the look of him,= Zeela decided.

*You don't like the look of any of these one-faces.* Zhahar still just sounded amused by her two younger sisters.

It had been a long time since Victor had been in a school library, but from what he could tell this one smelled about the same as it had back at East Angeles High.

That was the only point in common, though. This one was bigger, grander, more impressive in every way than the school libraries he'd seen. He paused in the atrium for a moment, taking a good look before he plunged into the stacks.

"Looks like I ended up at a rich kid school."

"Man, if you think you ended up at one of those, I hate to think what the hell you think I am," Sparkle intoned, still sitting cross-legged on the table that he'd hopped up on. "I'm wearing the K-Mart blue light special, as distributed through that oh so holy of fashion outlets, the fucking Salvation Army."

A beat, and then he was giving Victor a sharp little grin.

"Maybe we both got on the wrong bus, and they just haven't had the hearts to chase us out yet."

"Wild guess, but you might be into punk?" Victor grinned back. Not his look, but no fashion statement struck him as extreme after watching Nico's wardrobe for months. "And dios, I hope not. My friends would get pissed at me if I got kicked out and they had to come pick me up already."

"Into it? I am the very definition of it, if you ask some of the rich assholes that I've had to share neighbourhoods with in the past," Sparkle admonished with a wave of his hand. "Being kicked out on its own isn't all that bad, anyhow. It's the figuring out where to go next part that sucks. But from the sound of it, you've at least got somewhere to go back to, huh?"
