the weird silver lining of the last/current papacy's objection to liberation theology is that the church forbids priests to seek political office. very much a separation of church and state. but it's also totally hypocritical if you take all the allegations about jean paul 2's role in the democratization of eastern europe seriously.

about the only good thing you can say about him is that (a) he USED to be a moderate and (b) he's old: they didn't choose him for longevity.

but having said all that, i don't think there is much appetite in the church, as a global body, for liberalism. some portions of the church in n.america and europe may be more liberal, but that is certainly not the case worldwide.

gah. I guess The Church doesn't care that much about the MILLIONS of people around the world who were looking to it for, um, something real, not just words and ceremony. The guys in red robes are just frickin' clueless.
