Jason looked up as Casey walked in his diner. “Want a bacon pocket?” he asked as she sat down.
She made a face. “No, I’m not hungry.”
He smiled. “I’m not a machine, Casey. But if you want to.” He took off his apron and began to untuck his shirt.
She grabbed his arm. “No, I’m not here for that either. We need to talk.”
“I’ve heard that before,” he mumbled.
“Jason, I’m pregnant,” she told him quickly.
He blinked. “Haven’t heard that before.”
“Sorry, I’m not too good with the whole subtlety thing.”
“Yeah, I picked up on that,” he mumbled. He let out a breath and leaned against the counter. He opened his mouth then closed it again before shaking his head. “Damn, Casey.”
A customer walked in, Jason slammed his fist on the counter. “We’re closed.”
“The sign said…” the other man began.
“We’re closed,” he repeated as he walked around the counter and roughly pushed him out then locked the door and flipped the open sign over. He braced himself against the door, one hand on either side of the frame. “Is it mine?” he asked without looking at her.
She rolled her eyes. “Of course it’s yours.”
He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled before turning to look at her. “So what do we do?”
She shook her head and shrugged. “Well, from now on, we’re gonna use birth control. As far as this goes,” she said, motioning to her stomach. “We have about eight months to figure that out.”
