prompt table and disclaimer Penny turned into the laundry room with her empty basket under her arm, when she saw Leonard standing over a washer, measuring fabric softener.
She opened her mouth to speak, but then shook her head and turned to leave just as he looked up at her.
“Hey,” he said, looking back down.
She let out a sigh of relief then turned around. “Hi. I just need to…” she trailed off, pointing to a dryer.
“Sure.”
“My clothes,” she mumbled.
“Yeah.” He nodded, not looking up.
“Ok,” she said awkwardly. She pulled her clothes out of the machine quickly, tossing them carelessly into the basket. She pulled her bed sheet out last, wrapping it awkwardly around her arm so it wouldn’t touch the floor.
He glanced up again. “Here,” he said walking over to her. He took the edge of the sheet that was still hanging loose then took a few steps back and helped her fold the sheet correctly. When he stepped forward to put their ends together, their hands met for a fraction of a second before he yanked his hands away and went back to his machine.
“Well, um…” he began awkwardly. “I’ll… I’ll get outta your way,” he mumbled, grabbing his basket and soap before he began to walk out of the room.
She let out a breath and turned as he reached the door, tossing the sheet onto the top of the basket. “Leonard, wait.” He stopped but didn’t turn. “I hate this,” she told him. “I hate all of this. I hate having to stay in my apartment when you leave and come home from work. I hate hiding when I see you and the guys…”
“You hide from us?” he asked, finally turning to look at her.
She nodded. “I hate having to avoid you and I hate that when I can’t it’s so awkward between us. I hate that we can’t just talk like we used to.” She let out a breath and looked down. “I hate that I don’t have a computer guy anymore because my computer is such a piece of shit and it froze again…”
“I can probably fix it,” he mumbled.
She smiled. “Thanks,” she said softly. “I hate that I haven’t had a real conversation with my best friend in almost three weeks. I really miss him.”
He nodded and kicked a piece of dirt on the floor. “He misses you too,” he mumbled. “Umm… Raj and Howard are coming over, we’re gonna have Thai food if you want to…”
“You sure?”
He nodded again. “Yeah, I can work on your computer.” He glanced at her laundry basket. “And I know Sheldon’s missed folding your laundry.”
