Summary: S1. Claire and Shannon hear the monster.
They're lying together, soft skin pressed to soft skin and Shannon's hand on Claire's pregnant stomach, but they don't make a sound. Their hot breath is too loud, too heavy in the darkness of the tent. Outside, like clockwork, the monster roars. Shannon twitches and tries to pretend that she hasn't heard anything at all; if she lies still enough, maybe she can fool even herself into believing that she's still asleep.
She doesn't believe in monsters. Even as a child, she was never scared of what lurked beneath the bed. Claire's hand finds hers and holds on tightly, so tightly, but nestled against Claire she still can't feel safe.
"We're going to be fine," Claire promises, whispering to the darkness. "It hasn't come onto the beach before."
"I know that," Shannon snaps. "I'm not scared of a little monster. It's probably just…"
But her acid tongue can't find anything suitably scathing, so she has to hold on tight and allow Claire - sweet, improbably innocent and ridiculously pregnant Claire - to be the one to comfort her through the night.
