Title: Stray Cat Strut

The first cat was easy enough to keep well-fed. They were never in such dire straits in the TV that the one fish a day he gave to it would make much of a difference in their fates. And watching it go from so thin that he could see its ribs showing through its coat to healthy-sized and purring was worth the cost of a fraction of his fishing bounty.
When the second cat showed up, twining through his feet and purring like a chainsaw as soon as it caught the scent of the fresh-caught fish he was carrying, it was fine too. He'd need to catch around sixty fish a month instead of around thirty, but he could dedicate his weekends to it. It wasn't like he could deny it food anyway; it was only a half-grown kitten, he couldn't just leave it to starve.
But when the third one showed up, he had to sigh. He squatted down on his heels beside it to take a look at it, a tiny black and white thing with shadow-gold eyes, then glanced over at the first and oldest cat. "Okay, guys," he told them, holding out his hand to let the new one get a sniff of him before scratching its forehead. "I'll take care of this one too, but that's it. Any more and you'll need to start sharing your fish instead of getting a whole one for yourself."
As he divvied out their food, giving the eldest the meat off a steak skewer to make up for the fact that he'd only brought two fish, he thought that it might just be time to give up and start buying cat food instead of relying on evenings spent fishing to keep them fed. Whatever he might say, all signs hinted that he wouldn't be any better at turning down a fourth cat than he was with the other three.
