Sometime in the future- maybe three or four years- Republic City is hit by a sort of plague. Think Bubonic, but... Almost not as tragic. Tragic, but it doesn't quite wipe out a third of the population.
Times seem pretty bleak, but our main characters try to convince themselves that the whole epidemic will blow over eventually.
That is, until one of them catches it.
Up to the filler which character contracts the disease.

...and reading the fill, it's not quite what you want...as in, it's pretty fucking tragic. Like, J.K. Rowling-style tragic. Hopefully that's still okay?

Well...this might be a bit more tragic than OP wants it. But I'm posting anyway.
Five parts plotted out and partially written. Here's Part one, Part two is forthcoming. Parts three through five might take a bit longer, as I don't have them fully written yet, but I wanted to get started posting.

Would OP mind another fill? (I had been planning on writing something, until this gloriously sad fill satiated my desire to see this prompt filled. Still...)
I'm planning on something that won't have a 'downer ending' per se, but the suffering of the characters will be about 10 times as much. ;0
By the way, highest props to first authoranon, Bolin's death scene... chills. Closest I've ever come to crying when reading a fanfic. You win all the internets.
So, if you don't mind, I'm going to give you a second fill. Because tragedy is my one true love in this world.
