Eli's still shouting as they take him away, and John almost laughs-except the ache in his gut that he's been ignoring since he was flung up against the steering wheel of the president's car suddenly demands his attention, and he staggers and sucks in a breath.
"I'm fine, baby," he tells Emily when she looks up at him. She doesn't look convinced, but he puts on a smile, and she runs off to find her mom when he asks her to.
"I thought I told you not to lie to your daughter," says a voice at his side, suddenly, and John's going to answer, he is, but it's really hard to find his voice, for some reason--air in general, now he thinks of it, he can't suck in enough of it--and everything starts to fade away--
"And oh my God, Dad, he promised he'll take me up on Air Force One once you're okay, and he's going to give us a tour of the city, and he's giving me an interview for my vlog, and he said we-Dad? Dad!"
John blinks, and then there's a teary "Oh my God," and a small, warm girl leaning off a chair and hugging his chest as hard as she can.
"I'm okay," he says, and strokes Emily's head. And he means it.

Steve usually wakes up earlier than she does, though Darcy isn't sure if it's the 1940s or the Army that instilled him with his Puritan work ethic. Steve never gives her a straight answer.
Sometimes, though, Steve tosses and turns all through the night and stays in bed until noon. Darcy pads around the house quietly on days like this and never asks what he dreams about.
She wonders what it must be like to fall asleep and wake up with everyone you love dead. She wonders how he lets himself love at all, after that.
It must be terrifying.
