Kris stands in front of Jesse and Kaleb. He's been waiting for their reaction to his costume, but so far, it's obvious that he hasn't impressed his boys. Jesse has refused to dress up as anything and didn't even want to go Trick-or-Treating until Kaleb and Katy convinced him that it was fun and he would regret not going. Kaleb's dressed as a lion.

"What do you guys think?" he asks.

"Looks nice, Daddy!" Kaleb said. He smiled endearingly and nuzzled Katy, practically purring, "Candy now, Mama?"

"Who are you supposed to be again?" Jesse asks. He's not trying to be rude or anything. It's just that Kris looks totally weird, in some costume that isn't even a real superhero.

"You guys," Kris says, seriously bummed. "You really don't know who Quailman is?"

"I know who a mailman is!" Kaleb announces happily. Jesse giggles.

"Honey, I think they're a little young to remember Doug," Katy says sympathetically. "But if it helps, I think you look adorable." She kisses him and Kris feels slightly better.

They walk outside with the boys and Jesse's question brings Kris's mood down all over again.

"Who's Doug? Is he a friend of yours or something who told you that looks cool? Because just so you know, it looks kind of silly."

"It's a show I used to watch on TV when I was a kid," he explains, feeling ancient and irritated.

"Is it like The Wizards of Waverly Place? Is Doug a Wizard?" Jesse wonders, looking intrigued.

"Yay, Max!" Kaleb cheers, oblivious to the point of the conversation.

"No. He's not my friend, and he's not a wizard. He's just a cartoon and his favorite superhero's Quailman. And for the record, he's very cool."

"This was way back in the 90's, huh?" Jesse wonders as they approach the first house. "Before Pixar, right?"

Jesse flashes a smile at Katy that makes Kris sigh in frustration.

"Jesse, stop with the questions for now, honey, okay? Now, we're at the first house. Who knows what to say?" she quizzes.

"Trick or Treat!" Kaleb shouts.

"And what do we say afterward?"

"Thank you," both boys chorus.

At the third house, they hit their stride, and Jesse warms up to the idea of knocking on people's doors. He sees a classmate from school inside the house.

"Who the heck is your dad supposed to be?" he scoffs and Kris braces himself.

"Haven't you ever heard of Quailman?" Jesse asks, like it's the most obvious thing in the world, and not a superhero he learned about fifteen minutes ago.

"No, who's that?"

"A superhero. Duh," Jesse says, and he slides his hand into Kris's.

On the way home, Kaleb’s asleep on Katy’s shoulder, and Jesse is starting to lag behind. Without a word, Kris scoops him up and carries him the rest of the way home.

“Thanks, Quailman,” Jesse says sleepily. Like his brother, he rests his head on Kris’s shoulder.

“You bet, kiddo,” Kris responds, feeling a little better about his costume after all.
