When the news came, Adam found he was unprepared for it. First, his parents divorce, and now this. His cat (really the family's, but always had loved Adam best) had passed away. Even though he was away himself, overseas, he found he couldn't reconcile the loss. Not until he got home.

Home wasn't really home at all anymore. His dad was there, while his mom had amicably relocated somewhere else. Somewhere close, but still. Whenever Adam pictured his parents, he pictured them together. So, there was the house. It had changed in so many ways. The lack of Tabby's was just one more totally tangible way.

Years passed. A lot of years. And it wasn't until he was settled, with a daughter of his own that he began to think of the possibility of a pet. Not a cat, though. Adam wasn't ready for that yet. But Chanté was seven now, and had been asking for a dog. A dog, he could do. Maybe. If it was well-behaved. They went to the animal shelter, because it made sense. Why go to a breeder when there were dogs already here that needed a home?

"So, what kind of dog do you want?" Adam asked, swinging Chanté's hand in his own, as they walked up to the door.

"Probably, I will like a brown dog," Chanté said thoughtfully.

She had made so much progress in two years. Adam was amazed every day at what she would say, how strong her English was getting, and her observations about the world. She hadn't forgotten the earthquake that took her parents away and still prayed for the family left behind there. It was strange, being a believer in astrology while his daughter came to him believing in more of an organized religion, but Adam was supportive. Prayers based love were great.

"A brown dog. Okay. We'll see if we can find one for you."

They walked inside the shelter and Chanté immediately stood a little closer to Adam. Public places made her nervous, especially unfamiliar ones. When they arrived by the cages, she appeared even more worried. He bent down to her level. "Are you okay?"

"I don't like the cages," she said, staring at them with wide eyes.

"No, I don't either."

There was a long pause, and Chanté eyed Adam seriously. "Can we have all the dogs?"

"No," he said softly. "We can have one dog. So, let's go see if we can find the right one for you."

Chanté sighed and walked beside him, but soon grew more comfortable and let go of Adam's hand to explore the dogs on her own. "Daddy! Here!" Adam heard, after only a minute or two.

As he approached Chanté, he could see her crouched in front of a particular kennel, greeting a certain dog in her native French Creole. "What did you find?" he asked, amused and touched by her sweetness with the animal.

"It's my brown dog," she said proudly, standing up. "Let him out now?"

Adam laughed and got a better look at the young chocolate lab puppy. "I think it's a girl," he said. All the other dogs around this one were going crazy at the people around, but Chanté, it seemed, had found the calm one of the bunch.

"He's a girl?" Chanté cocked her head, studying the puppy again. "Okay,"she said watching Adam expectantly.

Adam got all the information about the dog and before he knew what happened, Chanté was carrying her new best friend to the car.

"What should we name her? How about Bear?" he asked, keeping his eyes on the road.

He could sense Chanté's dislike for the name almost instantly. "She's a girl. You said," she accused, as if that made all the difference.

"I did, and she is. Why? What do you want to call her?" he asked, genuinely curious.

"I think she looks like a penny. Like a brown penny," Chanté elaborated, and the puppy in her lap licked her cheek.

"Penny, it is, then," Adam grinned, grateful that Chanté would have the chance to love something just as deeply as he loved Tabby.
