"What are you writing, 'Vati?" Lavender asks casually from her bed, which is straight across from Parvati's.
Parvati's hand pauses above the page, quill in hand, as she contemplates her answer. "Notes," she lies. "For Potions. I'm a bit behind."
She doesn't like keeping secrets from Lavender. But if she knew Parvati had a diary, she'd insist on reading it (or feel hurt that she wasn't allowed to), and Parvati would never risk damaging their relationship by letting her read it. Even for the chance of discovering that her feelings might be reciprocated.

"Why didn't you accept his invitation, 'Vati?"
Parvati doesn't respond at first, pretending to ignore her, but when Lavender asks again, she is forced to look up from her essay. "I didn't really want to go with him," Parvati responds simply.
"But the Yule Ball's in just a few days. Unless you're...waiting on someone in particular?" Lavender prods, grinning mischievously.
"Maybe," she answers, giving a noncommittal shrug. She doesn't like keeping secrets from Lavender. But she can hardly admit the truth to herself, much less to anyone else - and least of all to Lavender.
"Oh, you're no fun. And...oh! I can't believe I forgot to tell you! Seamus asked me to go with him in Divination today," Lavender says, practically beaming. "I just knew he would. Now you just have to go with someone, 'Vati. I can't go by myself!"
Parvati smiles. "You know I could never let that happen."

"Where are you going, 'Vati?" Lavender asks, tears still shining in her eyes from her most recent bout of crying.
"To straighten Weasley out," Parvati responds fiercely.
"I wish you wouldn't."
"But he--"
"And I don't feel like being alone, either," she adds, trying to smile. A silence follows her statement, and Parvati can't help the few tears that spill out over her cheeks as she tries in vain to think of something to say.
"Why are you crying, 'Vati?" Lavender asks sadly.
She hates keeping secrets from Lavender. But telling her the truth would only make her emotional state worse, and Parvati can't bring herself to cause Lavender an ounce of pain she might be protected from.
"Because you're my best friend, Lavender."
It's not a lie. But it's not the whole truth, either.
