He missed him.
He missed the quirky boy with the messy brunette hair; Kibum longed for the owner of those bottomless eyes of hazel -- those eyes which sometimes stared at him from the edge of the woods; those eyes now etched on the face of a wolf.
Werewolf.
Donghae was a werewolf.
Kibum was the only one who knew. He was the only person Donghae had let in on his little secret -- While everyone thought he’d run away from home, Kibum knew the real reason behind the elder boy’s sudden disappearance from town.
Before Kibum’d found Donghae lying wearily -- not a stitch of clothing on his human body, and his finger nails caked with mud, for that matter -- on his front porch, by boundary woods one day, they’d never been close. They’d been acquaintances, really -- only interacting when assigned projects in school together; subjected to the occasional “Hi” when they would pass each other in the hallways.
But Kibum liked to believe that maybe; maybe that had all changed when he’d snuck Donghae into his house, loaned him some apparel -- given him a place to stay while he was human; a place to sleep at night.
They’d forged a bond during that period of time, only for it to be forced into a screeching halt when the lunar month loomed close -- Donghae sensing the return of the Wolf inside him, deeming himself too dangerous to be near society.
“Goodbye, Bummie.” he’d said, ruffling Kibum’s hair, a sad smile gracing his lips. “Thanks. Thank you for everything.”
And with that, he’d strode into the woods, awaiting the arrival of his transformation.
Kibum knew he’d be back; Donghae would return soon enough.
But for now, the full moon shone above, pale and iridescent -- Its glow taunting, mocking; reminding Kibum of the elder boy's curse.
Just like the howls he could hear now, sounding from behind the trees.
