i know how you feel. on matters like this i find myself torn between looking for a philosophical explanation and just saying fuck it, who cares. unfortunately i lean to the latter too often.
asking questions...

Alex, I'm glad that you're asking the question, "why do we keep livejournals?" When I started mine, I included a mission statement of sorts saying that I would use it just to talk about interesting things and not to just list out the events of the day. Then I started having less to talk about, and started just writing out what I was angry about and such, so I stopped posting :)
Anyhow, I think you have enough interesting thoughts to generate some great reading and discussion on your LJ without having to reveal personal info.
I remember i discussed this with you way back when you still put details of your life on your online journal. I still admire your decision and commitment to being rather brief with your entries. Online Journals are mostly a hybrid of things that wield positive and negative effects, though the negative effects are often overwhelming. Online Journals create a way for people to feel better by simply writing things out (because it does help a lot), but it also opens a window for feedback, misinterpretation, rumors, and serves as the start to many grape vines. People who use their online journals for the sole purpose of getting a response will have a ridiculous amount of negative effects they have to deal with, more so than somebody who writes to simply feel better having written down what they were thinking (although they cannot avoid negative feedback altogether either). There are redeeming qualities to online journals, but one certainly doesn't need one. It's the people who take them to the extreme that get an unbearable amount of

Very true Al Enger, its comments/feedback like this that makes me so happy to have you as a friend. You are amazing to talk to and I am more than glad to know I can always count on you for amazing conversation at the lunchtable!!!
I myself just use them as a way to keep in touch with people that I hardly (or may never again) see. Sure, I may hint at personal things, profess certain lifeish vagueries, make up new words, but for me it's all in fun.
Goodness knows I'll never write down in its entirety what is really going on. I'm not that willing to express my personal life indiscriminately. My privacy is an important thing to me. When I share my deepest thoughts and troubles, I am giving away a part of myself--so only to the most trusted people in my life will I share all of myself. And they are few and far between.
So don't feel obligated to share anything on your livejournal.
