Kugan un-shouldered his pack just outside of Callistro's stall, lifting the latch and stepping inside. One hand smoothed along the glossy black flank, patting the stallion's solid muscles as they twitched, hind leg closest to him stamping on the ground.
He heard the perturbed snort, watching as that large head shook, sending the mane flying for a moment before the long black hairs settled back into place. Kugan began to talk; words nothing more than softly murmured praises to let Callistro know who was there.
The horse settled once Kugan was in sight. He rubbed that soft nose, pulling the apple out of his pocket with his other hand; he knew better than to approach what his father referred to as 'that Godsdamned beast' without an offering. Callistro dipped the black head down, nudging at his arm to get at the apple. Kugan chuckled, lifting his hand and giving the fruit to the big horse, petting the side of Callistro's muscled neck.
He moved to pick up Callistro's brush, stepping back beside his steed and running the brush along the solid flank. The motion was comfortable, allowing his nerves to settle while his mind wandered.
Sir Enderlin was a fine figure of a Knight; tall, broad of shoulder, handsome, refined and dignified. But the Knight was getting old, gray hairs mingling with the man's dark brown hair and beard. It was quite a shame, really, but even the greatest of warriors are eventually beaten by those that are younger and faster, those that are still in their prime.
Kugan knew that Sir Enderlin had a large estate in Melgren, but of the man's family? He knew nothing but rumors.
His father had remarked on more than one occasion that it was a terrible shame how Sir Enderlin had never taken a wife, and to the best of anyone's knowledge had never fathered any children. It was rumored that if Sir Enderlin were to fall during one of the Tourneys, that the entire Enderlin Estate would be left in the capable hands of the Knight's most trusted confidant, a man by the name of Juniper.
Kugan finished brushing Callistro, turning and grabbing a small bag to pack a few things that he would need for the horse. He saddled the big horse, fastening his pack on the back of his steed as well.
He stood there, fussing with straps and buckles, double and triple checking things that he knew were already ready to go, stalling until Sir Enderlin's Paige came to fetch him from the stable.
