a short lil' ficlet I wrote as a Christmas present to the friend that finally talked me into watching Firefly. If it weren't for her I wouldn't have my newest obsession.
Merry Christmas to all you Mal/Inara shippers out there lol.
Mal waltzed in to Inara’s shuttle like he owned the place, which Inara guessed he did. Some things never changed. It hadn’t been her shuttle for a long time now, but his lack of concern for her privacy still irked her. Still, her heart beat raced at the sight of him.
“Hey ‘Nara…”
She rolled her eyes. He looked like he might be about to say something more but he faltered. She knew their track record. They could only be in the same room together for so long before the arguing started. She decided to speed things up. Cutting to the chase she asked, “What do you want Mal?” her tone a little more resigned then she would have liked. She didn’t dare to hope that he would actually say the words she wanted to hear. She could almost laugh at the irony of their situation. Months ago, when she still called Serenity her home, he had been ready to tell her. She had run from him then, too afraid of her own feelings. Now all she wanted was to hear him say it. She thought if he could just find his way back there again, there would still be hope for them. She needed there to still be hope. But he just froze. Her heart faltered, skipped a beat, she continued to wait. Would they ever get there?
He moved close to her as if pulled by a chord they could both feel but neither could see. His hand twitched as if it longed to touch her. She felt the pull between them too. She always had, but she refused to move towards him. He would have to make all the moves this time.
The silence continued to stretch. It stretched between them like the invisible chord that bound them and then the silence reached a breaking point. “Stay” he whispered. He was so close to her now that she could feel his warm breath on her cheek. His lips brushed her skin as he spoke that one word. It wasn’t exactly what she had needed to hear, but somehow it was enough. It was then that she knew the chord would never truly break. They were joined and now it seemed that they both truly knew it.
