Usually it's:
1. I instinctively feel that I'm not writing whatever I'm writing the right way. I need to take a step back and reassess--figure out where I went wrong.
2. Life is taking over and I can't focus. In that case, I just let writing rest. Pushing myself further is bad for my mental health.

3. I'm not excited about whatever I'm meant to be writing. The trick here is to not write for a while and focus, instead, on thinking about it. I let myself fall back in love with the project (or a different project, if need be); I write down notes about the characters, I create a playlist, I re-read sections I love, I try to think of new directions the plot could go into. I try to remember why I wanted to write it in the first place--and then when I get that first spark of enthusiasm back, I feed it by brainstorming more.
