“Duo! Cover!”
Despite the pain blossoming across his left side, Duo was already twisting, ducking, and cramming himself between two large, wooden crates. He moved fast for someone who’d just been shot. Luckily it had been a through and through in the subcutaneous tissue, but Duo wasn’t eager to give the gunrunners a second try at him.
Seeing the surprised and rather impressed look on Heero’s face, Duo shouted: “Well, you know how that old saying goes!”
Heero slammed a new clip into his gun before shaking his head “no” at Duo.
“What saying?”
Duo peeked over the top of the crate he was crouched behind. He picked off two gunmen before he was forced to duck down again, curling up into a tight ball as a spray of machinegun fire ripped into their corner of the warehouse.
The volley began to lose a bit of its edge while the smugglers slowed a bit to reassess the situation, and Duo turned to answer Heero’s question.
“The one that goes: ‘shoot me once, shame on you; shoot me twice, shame on me.’ You know!”
Heero slunk across the floor to where Duo had taken refuge and hauled them both to a slightly safer location behind a metal shipping container.
“That’s not how the saying goes!” he hissed at Duo, even as he squeezed off a shot and took out one of the men in the catwalk above them.
Duo ripped off his shirt, rolled it up, and tied the sleeves around his waist to bind his wound. Hopefully he wouldn’t bleed out before they could extract themselves from this mess.
“Besides,” Heero continued to push/pull/drag/throw Duo along as he headed in an oblique line for the side door, “you shot me twice the first day we met!”
Duo looked down to discover that they were currently taking refuge behind a spilled box of shiny new grenades. He grabbed one in each hand and motioned for Heero to precede him out the door.
“Damn straight, I did shoot you twice!" Duo said, getting into position.
He pulled the pins from the grenades and counted carefully to “five” before lobbing them into the center of the warehouse and the crowd of advancing gunmen.
As he ran after Heero into the fire-bright night, Duo called out: “And you should be very ashamed of yourself!”
