Little Yoochun was concentrating extra hard on making small mounds of dark clouds for his boss, the God of Rain, when Jaejoong toddled over, tripped on a stray lightning bolt left on the ground by Yunho, and bellyflopped right into Yoochun’s orderly cloud piles.
“Hyung!” Yoochun whined.
Jaejoong smiled sheepishly and breathed a soft little ‘sorry’ at his friend.
Unfortunately, as little Jaejoong worked under the God of Wind, his apology only served to scatter Yoochun’s clouds into long ropes stretched across the sky.
The reproachful look that Yoochun turned on Jaejoong had the little wind deity scrambling to his feet and rushing about trying to blow the clouds back into their original piles. Unfortunately, Jaejoong wasn’t very good at creating dark ominous cloud piles, so he just kind of made a huge fluffy white mess of the sky.
“Hey, I thought we were doing a big storm?” Little Yunho’s hair was standing all on end, thin slivers of electricity crackling from strand to strand and, occasionally, flashing over to shock wee Changmin who was sitting at his feet.
Changmin smiled hopefully and waved his hammer at Yoochun before smashing it down on a couple cloud tendrils. However, his smile fell right away when the expected crash of thunder did not happen. With deeply furrowed brows, he tried a couple more smashes, but the clouds remained stubbornly silent.
Sniffling, tiny little Changmin turned a sad face up to Yunho and said in his most serious voice: “No boom.”
Yunho looked at Yoochun… who pointed at Jaejoong… who was stooped over blowing at a fat white cloud until it formed into a heart shape.
There was a long moment of silence.
Then Changmin threw his hammer at Jaejoong.
The imminent fight was only forestalled by the timely arrival of little Junsu, one of the smallest of the little sun deities.
He was weaving his way over the mess of clouds that Jaejoong had made, poking holes into all the heavier ones, and smooshing all the miniscule cloud threads into something a little bit more like a streak.
“I get to make a sunset all by myself today!”
He had made his announcement to no one in particular, but the other four little deities toddled over to go look anyway.
“I just got this new pot of rose-gold paint. I think it will look nice here.”
And he upended the whole thing onto one of Jaejoong’s elephant-shaped clouds (there were several floating about).
Changmin started rooting around for his hammer.
“Who let you be in charge of sunsets?” asked Jaejoong, outraged. “You have no sense of colour!”
Yoochun patted the pinky-gold cloud elephant into a more standard cloud shape and he stretched it out a bit so it wasn’t such a solid mass of one colour.
“Junsu does good sunsets, hyung. You’ll see.”
Then he started mixing the one coloured cloud with some of the spare white ones until there was a good variety of pinks and golds with which to work.
Jaejoong sighed and blew the variegated clouds across the western sky so that they stretched into pretty ribbons. Yunho and Changmin helped by poking holes and twisting shapes into some of the ribbons so that they looked like elegant lace.
When the God of the Sun drove by on his chariot as he headed to his home below the western horizon, he paused to beam down at little Junsu.
“Very impressive, little one. I’m quite proud of you,” he said, giving Junsu a pat on the head.
Junsu smiled brightly and waved good night to his boss.
The God of the Sun produced from somewhere about his person a cupcake the size of Junsu’s head and handed it down to his small apprentice.
“Thank you for your hard work today.”
And off he went.
Junsu opened his mouth… and ate the cupcake all in one go.
Changmin, who had finally found his hammer buried in a dumpling-shaped cloud, promptly turned around to chuck it at Junsu.
