“Duo! Duo, honey, what are you doing?”
Little Duo tore through the house, his black wings folded tight against his back to keep them from getting caught on something as he careened around corners.
“I lost my runner! Mom! What did you do with it?” he bellowed, waving one black shoe over his head as he ran past her.
“I told you not to leave your things all over the place, honey.”
“I left them BOTH by the DOOR, mom,” he whined. “I need the other one now!”
Mrs. Maxwell, quite accustomed to her son’s running pattern, managed to intercept him just as he hurtled past the dining room. She scooped him up with both hands and held him still even as his little legs kept running mid-air.
“Mooooom! Leggo! You’re gonna make me late!”
“Duo Maxwell, that is enough!”
Mrs. Maxwell unfurled her wings and bared her fangs, and little Duo slumped into a petulant dead weight in her arms.
So she dropped him.
“Ow, mom!”
“Now, apologize for being rude, and then tell me what you’re doing and where you’re going in such a rush.”
There was a second where Duo looked like he was going to be stubborn, but a minor shift of his mom’s great leathery wings was all he needed to cave.
“I’msorryforbeingrudeandIneedtofindmynicerunnerssoIcangoflyinginHeavenwithHeero.”
Mrs. Maxwell blinked.
“Mom, I need to go. I’m gonna be late!”
After watching Duo fidget for a good minute, Mrs. Maxwell finally relented and let him go about his business.
“Do you want me to pack you two a snack?” she called out as the whirlwind that was her son flew past her for a third time.
“Heero said his mom is making sandwiches-oh! Found my runner! Bye, mom!”

Though Heaven and Hell were usually mutually exclusive, they both made exceptions for play dates. This was because, eventually, all Angels and Demons had to do a stint in Purgatory and it was better if they already had some connections on ‘the other side’ as it were. It was all about networking.
And fun.
Little Duo the demon hopped impatiently from foot to foot as he waited in line at Saint Peter’s gate for entry into Heaven. Occasionally, he’d flutter his wings and hover a couple inches off the clouds, but he knew that flying in the waiting area was strongly frowned upon. He knew this largely because he’d already been punished for it several times before.
When it was finally his turn to approach the gatekeeper, Duo skipped right up to the big, ornate gold desk with a bright smile on his face and all his charm turned up to maxium.
“Hi, Mr. Peter!” he chirped.
“Hi, Duo. Are you here to play with Heero today?”
“Yes, sir. I have a note!” Duo dug around in his pockets until he found the aforementioned note, slightly crumpled, and held it up high for Saint Peter to see. “Can I go in now? I think I’m late.”
Saint Peter leaned across his desk to take the grubby note from Duo’s little fist.
“Okay. Let me get you a day pass.” He opened a small drawer, put the note in and took a shining white feather out. “Now, Duo, don’t lose this like last time, okay? We’re not supposed to let demons fly around willy-nilly in Heaven, even if they’re little cute ones like you.”
Duo nodded solemnly as he took the feather and showed Saint Peter just how tightly he was gripping it.

Little Heero was waiting for Duo just inside the Gates.
“You’re so late,” he said with a heavy sigh.
And it took the entire walk to the flight park for Duo to explain the whole story about wanting to wear his good shoes because he was going into Heaven but losing one of them and then getting scolded by his mom for running in the house and being rude even though it was her fault because she clearly moved his shoe even though he’d left them both neatly by the door like he was supposed to--
“Why’d you wear your good shoes anyway? You’re just gonna get them scuffed up.”
Duo took the time to scowl at Heero for a second before looking down to solemnly contemplate his nicely clad feet.
“I didn’t want to look scruffy in Heaven,” he mumbled, wiggling his toes a little.
Heero stared at him.
Duo stared at his shoes.
“No one cares what you look like, you’re just a kid,” Heero said finally.
Duo turned a beaming smile up at Heero.
“Really?”
“Yeah, dummy. Really. Now can we keep going? We’re gonna miss all the morning updrafts if we wait any longer.”
“Ah!” Duo almost tripped in his hurry to get going. “I hate that still air you guys get up here in the afternoon. It’s gross! All creepy warmish.”
“Better than those burning hot drafts you get down in Hell,” said Heero, laughing as he jogged ahead of his friend.
“You’re the one who always insists on playing by the lava pits!”
And the two of them ran, and stumbled, and flew, and fluttered the rest of the way to the flight park, laughing and joking, and creating a general ruckus across Heaven.

Because it was such a nice day and the wind direction was good for all levels of flight practice, it took a little while for the two boys to find a quiet patch of park where they could work on their vertical takeoff and landing skills by themselves without interruption.
“Wait.” Duo suddenly stopped, just as Heero wound up for his first launch of the day.
Heero fell on his face.
“I need to… um…” Duo sounded preoccupied as he tried to stuff his precious feather into one of his pockets, but it was unfortunately too big to fit. “Just a sec. I can’t lose this again… I promised Mr. Peter… Maybe if I put it in my shoe?” he muttered as he crouched down.
“Oh, whatever! Just hang on to it like all the other demon kids do!”
Duo shook his head vigorously.
“That’s how I lost it last time! And we got in so much trouble, ‘member?”
Heero conceded that they had indeed gotten into quite a bit of trouble the last time Duo lost his feather, but he also pointed out that they hadn’t really gotten in trouble for Duo being in Heaven without a day pass, but really it had been more about the fact that they’d crashed through someone’s roof and accidentally destroyed that someone’s dining table.
Still, Duo was pretty sure that he needed to take extra care not to lose his special feather today.
“Look, if you lose it, you can just take one of mine to give to Mr. Peter instead when you leave. Let’s go.”
Duo gasped. “Heero, that’s LYING!”
Heero rolled his eyes. “You know a ‘day pass’ feather is just any ol’ angel feather, right? There’s nothing special about it. It just means that you’ve been angel-approved for temp’rary entry into Heaven.”
Duo didn’t look convinced.
“Fine. We’ll put your ‘Special Feather’ in my backpack, okay?”
“I think I have to hold it…”
“You really don’t.”
Duo clutched his feather in both hands.
“Seriously. I live here; you’d think I know the rules, right?”
After a moment of hesitation, Duo agreed and stuffed the all-important feather into Heero’s pack.

By early afternoon, the breeze had died down and Heaven was settling into what the Angels called “temperate” and the Demons called “disgustingly lukewarm” for the rest of the day. Most of the demon children, who tended to prefer extremes of temperature like their parents, bid their little angel friends farewell and returned home by this time, but Mrs. Yuy made the best sandwiches, so little Duo liked to stick around for a picnic lunch with Heero before heading back.
As they ate, Heero occasionally flapped his wings to create a bit of a breeze for Duo because he knew his friend didn’t like the still air.
“I like your wings better than mine,” said Duo thoughtfully as he watched the ruffle of Heero’s feathers.
“Really?” Heero curled his wings forward so he could poke at them. Then he craned his neck to peer at the smooth black wings on Duo’s back. “At least yours don’t shed.”
“I guess…”
Duo angled his body so he could flick his wings in Heero’s direction and show him just how much he didn’t shed. The two boys giggled as the tips of their wings tangled and they rolled all over each other, and the remains of their lunch, as they tried to disengage from each other.
Of course they ended up, still in a tangle, with Duo sprawled on his tummy and Heero lying across his legs, but at least their respective wings were free.
They were silent for bit as they caught their breath. Duo pillowed his cheek on his hands and watched the grass unfurl from being crushed in the roughhousing. Heero propped his chin in one hand and patted Duo’s soft wings with the other.
After a minute or so, Duo suddenly rolled over, dislodging Heero completely.
“Can I keep this one?”
In his hand was one of Heero’s shed feathers, not shining quite as brightly as the ‘day pass’ feathers which were taken from adult Angels, but instead glowing a soft, pale, warm grey.
“Sure,” said Heero, his head cocked to one side as he contemplated the loose feather. “But why? I shed those things all the time.”
Duo took the small feather and gently, gently put it in the pocket of his shorts.
“It’ll be something to ‘member you.”
Heero folded his wings tight against his back and crawled closer to Duo until he was practically sitting in the other boy’s lap.
“Why would you forget me?”
Duo shrugged halfheartedly.
“My mom says that some day when we grow up, we won’t be allowed to play together anymore. We’ll only get to see each other when we go to work.”
Heero made a face, wrinkling his nose.
“That’s stupid. You’re my best friend.”
Duo shrugged again.
And Heero reached out to take a secure hold of one of Duo’s wing tips.
“I’m your best friend too, right?”
“’Course you are.” Duo nodded once, resolutely. “Who else would be my best friend?”
Heero kept a hold on Duo’s wing.
“But, I mean… Just in case… What will I have to ‘member you by?”
Brows furrowing, Duo contemplated the question very seriously.
And just as Heero was about to let go, Duo leaned in and kissed Heero softly on the cheek.
