You know, if they (the Huckabees and their ilk) were honest and it was just about "marriage", I might be more sympathetic to their charge. But when Tony Perkins from the Family Research Council trots his dog and pony show all over cable saying, "Look, all we want is to have marriage left the way it...you can have civil unions, etc", but then his organization bank rolls and gets the initiative to ban adoption and foster parenting on the ballot in Arkansas, I have to think, "What has to happen before you quit your lying?" It reminds me of something someone else said once:

the closet is the reason.

the reason they think that every queer who can't pass for straight when necessary hasn't been physically beaten down at least once in their life is because they didn't happen to be there to witness it themselves. and even if they were there to see the aftermath they might not have named it for what it was because the person who got their head kicked in was so deeply closeted that to have to come out of that closet after the attack would just be another invitation to more abuse.

and even the closeted people who can/could pass for straight when they need to for their own safety get to have entire lifetimes of people demonizing gays right to their face, since the attacker doesn't know they're talking to a queer

in these ways, no, the gay civil rights movement isn't like the civil rights movement for people of color at all. it's got this whole other weird dimension to it that the haters conveniently leave out.
