I can't believe that I'm writing to you here, I really can't, but I must.

Darren Shan did that? Shan, the only children's author I've read since....no longer being a child who managed to scare the heck out of me with bits of the Vampire books, fell for one of the silliest romanticised cliches?

That's just a shame. A real shame, and odd coming from someone who doesn't appear to go in for such things. I guess it's only one mistake, but it's a fairly major one. 'Single tear', honestly....

I shall now quote "Demon Thief" by Darren Shan, from the chapter entitled "Home Alonely":

As a single tear trickles down my cheek, I reach out like a robot and start slotting the patches of pulsing lights together.

The moment could have been a lot worse, but it could have been a lot better. I mean, seriously...

Oh, that's just bad enough for me. That line seems so pathetically melodramatic. There are ways and there are ways of getting emotion across, and I don't think that the 'single tear' style of romantic writing is one of them. At least not when used seriously.
