I am highly tempted to write a story now where the sweet, little princess-y heroine yells "calls dibs" and stabs the villain. That would be awesome.

I hate the whole "killing him will only make you as bad as he is" element.

especially because always, ALWAYS the villain will just AFTERWARDS kill the next most important Person of the heros life

Yes. Killing one irredemable villain is not as bad as killing countless innocents, as most villains do.

I'm planning to include a 'Dibs!' scene in a story I'm writing. We should all write stories like that; the world needs them.

Awesome post.

Or you could turn it around, "Don't kill him! I love him!", and then turn it into a whole new kettle of fish. :P

I had this issue last night while watching Torchwood. If someone's going to torture, kill and eat you? Shoot 'em while the shooting's good.

Or chop off the head and burn the heart. Depends on what kind of baddie you're dealing with.

As long as the result is the same, go for it! There's no moral dilemna when you're fighing someone with no morals.

Exactly. The end justifies the means, if the alternative would only result in more pain and death. I can get a moral argument to give the villain a quick and fairly painless death, but that's as far as it stretches for me.

Urgh.

I too would love to see the "dibs" version of that. LOL.

Stuff like that doesn't make me think about how noble the hero/heroine is, it makes me think they're really dumb. If you don't kill the villain, he's probably going to escape and do something big and catastrophic.
