Exactly. The end justifies the means, if the alternative would only result in more pain and death. I can get a moral argument to give the villain a quick and fairly painless death, but that's as far as it stretches for me.
Stuff like that doesn't make me think about how noble the hero/heroine is, it makes me think they're really dumb. If you don't kill the villain, he's probably going to escape and do something big and catastrophic.

I'm planning to include a 'Dibs!' scene in a story I'm writing. We should all write stories like that; the world needs them.

Or you could turn it around, "Don't kill him! I love him!", and then turn it into a whole new kettle of fish. :P
