Chelsea Quinn Yarbro writes the Saint-Germain Chronicles which are lovely richly detailed historical fiction with a vampire as the lead character. I remember reading something about Csar Nicolas not wanting to be the Czar when he was younger (late teens, early twenties), but later changed his mind.

Sure when he was younger that might have been true but just before WWI, when CQY was writing about him, Nicholas was just fine with being Czar and wasn't interested in stepping down at all.
