I wrote the post before finishing the book.

The self-insert got worse; he just drove up to the main character while he was stranded in the middle of nowhere in China and offered him a lift.

Deus Ex Machina can work, but you need to make it funny and not facepalmy. Have him drive up in a DeLorean and fly back to Vancouver, and I'd be fine with it.
