THEY KILL YOU WITH GOODBYE
By Carol Davis
She's no one he knows - that girl who's walking steadily along, half a block ahead of him, long blonde hair swaying with each confident step, one hand resting lightly on her purse, guarding it against being snatched, maybe just guarding the strap from sliding off her shoulder.
How could she be?
Someone he knows.
He hears a voice speak his name, the sound of it bursting out of the fog of his memory, becoming real again after all these years.
Sam.
He smiles. Can't help but smile.
He's never set foot in this town before, but… yes, people travel, relocate, change jobs, change lives.
It's possible he's met this girl before.
Because she's not…
Close enough, he thinks. All he can see of her is blonde hair, broad shoulders, a confident stride. That's good enough to let him slide back through the years, to a time when it could be her - could be the one he'd run to and throw his arms around, listening to her laugh when she realized who'd taken hold of her.
He smiles.
And softly, in a voice that purrs malice, Lucifer says, "You're never going to let go, are you?"
"Why should I?" Sam replies.
