To call someone a hero.

BROKEN
By Carol Davis

"Mom," he says, and his voice is soft, as if he's afraid of shattering something fragile, something that exists only through hope and a bit of luck.  When Andrea Barr looks up from her book, looks across the room at her son, his face is so fully sad that she has to glance away.

"Mom," he insists.  Her boy.  Her Lucas.  The son those men gave back to her.

"Honey."

That's all she can offer.

All she can give, right now.

The images are everywhere: TV, the newspaper, the Internet.  Even if she and Lucas barricaded themselves inside this house, she thinks, the story would still find them, the way that ghost did, years ago: would find its way in through the pipes, the wiring, through the tiny space at the bottom of the door.

It's a dangerous thing, she thinks, to call someone a hero.

FUGITIVE BROTHERS ON MURDER SPREE

The words scream at her from across the room, from the newspaper Lucas holds in trembling hands.

Walking across the room, gathering her son into her arms, takes every bit of strength she has.

"It can't be true," Lucas pleads into her shoulder.

"I know," she says.  "I know."
